Conversations with Mosi Magic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mosi Magic.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a mobile stylist gaining clients from internet ads and I opened an indie salon suite near the Santa Monica Pier. I rent space and my location recently celebrated it’s first year in business. I got certified by “The Hair Shop” enabling me to hold the title of Master Extensionist. I offer an interesting and diverse menu that includes extensions, classic cut/colour and the beaches most requested service which to my suprisee is braids.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing fun in life is ever smooth. Styling hair and running a business are two entirely separate things. I am the owner operator, marketer, janitor, loss prevention, manager, and hairdresser. I wanted to create a safe space to provide texture inclusive services to the beach dwellers and tourist in Samo. However this is my first experience running a physical location so I learned a lot through making mistakes. The first months of the business were terrifying. I had no startup cash, no decorations, very few supplies and a 3 year old daughter I care for alone. Somehow it all worked out.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the only suite owner in my building with my type of menu. I pride myself on offering services that are culture specific as a black woman to any human who enters my space. Creatively I am currently braiding clients who don’t generally have access to such a service. I added braids to my menu but it has taken a life of it’s own and I am braiding all of these cool human’s of every race and socio economic status.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I wish I had a mentor. I am still looking. My networking advice is to truly create a business ie choose a structure, file with the secretary of sate, gather all licenses, spend as much as possible on google and yelp, ask for referrals, and don’t forget to talk to people in the street. In the age of the internet many forget that the clients are the people we rush past. Smiling, saying hello, and actually building rapport with your neighbors is key to success.
