Conversations with Mimi Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Nguyen.

Hi Mimi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I went to college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. During my summers home from school, I spent my time designing T-shirts and customized denim shorts and sold them locally. At first, I thought designing was where my passion was until I started to get a lot of compliments on my outfits and getting asked for advice on how to put pieces together. The confidence and excitement I instilled in people after I helped them put together a whole look was when I knew styling was where my true passion was.

I moved to Washington, DC from Phoenixville, PA in hopes of starting fresh and making a name for myself. You’re probably thinking, “why not New York or LA?” I didn’t want to be a little fish in a big pond just yet. I wanted to get my feet wet first. DC is a smaller city with a smaller fashion culture, but still a very thriving and diverse one. I started inserting myself in rooms where I could network, which eventually led me to collaborate with different people in the industry. I then started my own styling business and started to get publications in local magazines. I then worked at New York Fashion Week and started building a book of business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been at all a smooth road. There have been many times I wanted to quit and give up. It was really hard for me to start getting paid gigs. In this industry, you have to work your way up, and a lot of the time that meant working for free. Unfortunately, working for free was not an option for me. I moved to a new city and knew about 5 people. I had to figure out a way to pay my bills while still pursuing my passion. The long days and nights were very hard on me at times but what kept me going was my passion for styling and being set on building a career out of it. I just had to keep reminding myself that this was only temporary and my hard work will pay off one day, and it has.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Wardrobe Stylist and I style both men and women. Some of the services I offer are Wardrove Revamps, Special Occasion styling (weddings, parties, events), and Creative styling (photoshoots and video shoots). What’s unique about me is that I don’t cater to just one type of clientele. Why I love styling so much is because I love the way I make my clients feel. I style anyone from businesswomen needing looks for a panel they’re speaking on to women who are new mothers and need to refresh their wardrobe to bring back their confidence. I can do it all and I’m happy to help anyone who wants and needs my services.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is my integrity. I believe that no matter what happens in life if you are kind and authentic and remain true to your morals and values, everything will always work out in your favor.
