Today we’d like to introduce you to Midnight Village. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Midnight Village is an indie pop/alternative band based in Los Angeles, CA. The band writes pieces about loneliness, heartbreak, and the internal struggles of the human condition. This sadness is veiled by the band’s mainstream production style and authentic instrumentation. The two members of Midnight Village, California-born Sean, and Philly-bred Tyler, met while working on another project and organically became inseparable, forming a brotherly bond over creating music together. This relationship naturally grew into the need to perform live and to showcase their songs.
Sean has co-written with pop and EDM artists, including Lilianna Wilde, Rossy, and Eiver Pálsdóttir. Tyler has spent years as a touring musician for multiple bands after graduating from UArts. He’s played the stages of The Van’s Warped Tour and assisted in productions with Ojivolta.
Since coming together in 2018, Midnight Village have found their stride with live audiences headlining LA venues like The Viper Room, the Santa Monica Pier, & The Mint, as well as Alley Taps and Cabana Taps in Nashville, TN.
Midnight Village’s debut single “Backstreets” has ~200k streams on Spotify. They’ve been featured on the world-renowned German audio electronics brand RME website and newsletter. Midnight Village’s most recent single, “Make Up Your Mind,” was featured on Peacock’s Love Island USA (Season 5, Episode 16). The band recently sold out a headline show at LA’s historic Hotel Cafe.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in a band in 2018 was a struggle for everyone, especially a new band like ours. Since starting our band, we were a 3-piece operation. We had to overcome the obstacle of losing a vital member of our outfit, which provided us with some clarity in the long run. Losing a member is like going through a breakup.
We also all had to embrace the new reality of the lockdown and the pandemic, which had its creative pros and obvious cons. We weren’t able to perform live nearly as much, but soon found a few places that would allow us to play acoustic on the street, which was fun for a bit. Having all of that downtime helped us harness our social media vision as well as how we wanted to finish and distribute our music our way.
Being an independent band is hard for various reasons. Sean and I take a lot of pride in creating our music and producing it all ourselves, but we are eager to add additional key members to our band to help us all accomplish our dreams.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Both Tyler and I have accomplished a lot individually, and this year, our band is proud to have made great strides in our career. We had our first placement on Reality TV show Love Island USA and recently sold out our hometown show, Hotel Cafe.
Sean is the lead singer for Midnight Village and has amassed a large social media following with his wife/Midnight Village Co-writer Lilianna Wilde through couple and relationship-based videos. Together, they have combined over 300k followers.
Tyler is the main producer for Midnight Village, currently assists producers OJIVOLTA, and teaches music to kids of all ages over the LA area.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We learned how to prioritize our time as a band and make the most out of the time we did have together with each other due to lockdown. We learned a lot of new tools outside music: video editing, mixing, filming techniques, and social media videos; we used this time to learn the things that we weren’t taught in school. We learned how to communicate better and set goals, which further centered us as a band.
