Conversations with Michele Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Davis.

Michele Davis

Michele, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I obtained my Business degree but knew I didn’t necessarily want to work in Corporate America, at least not immediately. I came back to LA and enrolled in Cosmetology school to get my license, I wanted to take a natural talent I already had, seriously. I began freelancing and ended up landing the Licensed Beauty Advisor role at Sephora. I learned so much working there and continued freelancing to build my clientele.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always obstacles in this industry and they never stop, to be honest, but that’s what proved to me that I wanted to really pursue this. Cosmetology school revealed to me how much ethnic hair and deeper skin tones were never meant to be a priority. Thus, I, myself, struggled to find nearly as many outlets in the beauty space where my own hair and skin tone were celebrated and educated upon so I found my way around that. Working at Sephora, especially the location I worked at, revealed that the industry still has issues catering to us so I made it my mission to seek out clients who needed my expertise about products for them. Even as a micro content creator now, I often feel overlooked because of the general beauty standards, but we move!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My bread and butter is Soft Glam and Neutral Glam. In LA, it’s all about looking polished on camera and film so, my being able to perform on a vast range of skin tones always keeps me in the mix. This can range anywhere from Male Grooming to Editorial work. An advantage for me is that I also can do hair so, I get booked for both on sets and clients do not have to source multiple people for that.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I never really had a mentor in the industry but when it came to networking, I always made sure I extended myself to others as a jack of all trades. I am my own walking billboard so being able to express that I do my own hair, makeup and even nails sometimes, always caught people’s attention. People who look like me and maybe always felt like glam was out of their reach or that it wouldn’t be done right, I always offer reassurance that they are my muses and my focus. My expertise in brand knowledge and how it connects to my community is the advantage.
