Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen Tepedino.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started painting when I was seven years old. Even at a young age, I felt drawn to color, movement, and creativity. My parents saw that spark early on and were incredibly supportive. They encouraged me and made me feel like I had something special to share. That early confidence and love for art stayed with me, and it’s what eventually grew into the artistic voice I have today.
As a former musician, my artwork is inspired by contemporary jazz, reggae, classical music and the blues. I currently invest my efforts in creating unusual, abstract designs using acrylic on canvas and mixed media at my Marina del Rey (Los Angeles) studio. My work brings a new flavor and accent that transforms and is described as eclectic and transcultural. My paintings are sold nationally by interior designers, art consultants, architects and contractors for residential and corporate projects. I also specialize in corporate art by creating original pieces designed for Commercial spaces.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to balance the creative side of my work with the realities of running a business. Creating art is the easy part—it’s the marketing, the visibility, and finding the right collectors that can feel challenging at times. There were also periods when sales were slow or when I questioned my direction, but each challenge pushed me to grow, refine my voice, and stay true to my purpose. Every struggle has ultimately made my work stronger and my commitment deeper.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My professional life has always centered around creativity. Alongside my art, I’ve spent over 25 years as a boutique owner, wardrobe stylist, and personal shopper, helping women feel confident and beautiful. I’ve also worked as an interior designer, which allows me to bring my artistic eye into people’s homes and commercial spaces. All of these roles utilize my understanding of color, texture, and composition from fashion and design.
My business practice is built on authenticity, consistency, and personal connection. Whether I’m styling a client, designing a room, or creating a painting, my goal is the same: to make people feel something and to create beauty that enhances their lives.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Jamaica shaped so much of who I am. I was a creative, curious child, always drawing, painting, or rearranging something to make it more beautiful. The colors, rhythms, and natural beauty of the island were a constant source of inspiration, even before I understood what inspiration was. Life in Jamaica taught me warmth, resilience, and a deep appreciation for people and culture. I was surrounded by a loving family, community, and an environment that encouraged expression. Looking back, that vibrant atmosphere, along with the encouragement I received at home, helped lay the foundation for the creative life I live today.
