Conversations with Mary Reinman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Reinman.

Mary Reinman

Hi Mary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in an extremely musical family. My mum put my brother and me in piano lessons when we both were three years old, and I always tried to pick up any instrument I could get my hands on after that. I had music around me from before I can remember, but was never pushed into it by anyone. I have always had the most supportive family, but I was never forced into it, which I think is a big part of why I love it so much and want to make a career out of it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have always been struggles. I know a lot comes from getting in my head about a lot of things as well as comparing myself to others that I see. Being in such a digital and ever-changing world poses challenges to “keep up” with the trends, but also the opportunities that come with all of the social media and everything are completely life-changing.

But absolutely there have been challenges. I have recently come to terms with a lot of them and I’ve realized that without the harder things that I’ve gone through to follow music, I would never be in Los Angeles now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I actually have a degree in songwriting. I went to university in Nashville, where I worked on writing for four years. I always get asked if I want to be just a writer, and while I love writing, I have always been a performer, so being an artist is my calling. I grew up performing as often as I had the chance to, and I feel so lucky that I found something that I love and can’t live without at such a young age.

My music has always been everything to me, and I’ve never seen a version of my life where I wasn’t doing it. People always told me growing up to “have a plan B” but I always thought that meant giving up. I understand I need to support myself, and right now I’m not living off of my music, but I don’t have a plan B. It’s either this or nothing.

I also have my first music video being released soon, so keep an eye out for that!!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Be careful of who you trust. This is something that I am really still working on. I have not quite learned this lesson yet, but I’m trying to pay attention to it. I’m a very trusting person, and I am so lucky to have found some of the most amazing people that exist and to have them as my friends, but I know that as I grow and meet more people, not everyone’s intentions are as pure as I hope they are, and I need to watch out for it early and learn to protect myself.
