Conversations with MaKenzie Godso

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaKenzie Godso.

Hi MaKenzie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started sewing during lockdown, and just never stopped! I’ve always loved fashion and putting outfits together, but something about sewing unlocked a whole new level for me. I could envision what I wanted to wear and then replicate it from fabrics I picked up from thrift stores. What started as a way to make cool clothes for myself, quickly morphed into a small business as more people wanted what I made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s a winding process, like learning any new skill. There are some really easy days in which I’m rapidly creating, working as fast as I can to make the piece before it leaves my brain. And then there are days where I’m tired and struggle motivating myself to create. But regardless, any time I’m actively creating is when I’m happiest, so I hold onto that in the harder times!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make one-of-a-kind clothing from preloved, upcycled materials. The process is really fun because I really allow myself to play. I don’t make a set amount of any silhouette or design. I just make whatever I feel like, depending on the day and what materials I have. It’s not very lucrative because of this, but it ensures that each piece comes from a part of me. And I think that’s what draws people to my clothing- every pieces feels very individualistic, yet when you look at all of my work, it somehow belongs in the same world. I’m most proud of my commitment to myself every day, for honoring my creativity and standing by my work.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have a lot of fond memories from childhood, but the best ones definitely involved being absolutely feral with my siblings. We would often torment each other on a four-wheeler my dad had, chasing each other in the backyard or around the neighborhood. I just remember the raucous laughter that filled these moments (after the bickering stopped of course!)
