Today we’d like to introduce you to Maiya Reaux.
Hi Maiya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My mission is to serve the homeless community with care and compassion. At Guardian Angel Supplies, we believe in the power of small yet meaningful acts of kindness to make a monumental difference in the lives of those in need.
The roots of my passion for helping others trace back to my childhood, spending weekends with my dad at a women’s shelter and giving socks to the homeless on Skid Row. Those moments shaped my heart, and I carry them with me always.
During my college years at Texas Southern University, where I actively participated in various community service initiatives. Among them, my heart was drawn most to aiding the homeless, as I found solace in connecting with individuals through genuine conversations.
I started by assembling small care packages from items I purchased at the dollar store, keeping them handy in my car to distribute to those in need. However, it wasn’t until last year that I felt a called to elevate this endeavor into something greater. Thus, Guardian Angel Supplies was born.
Our core initiative revolves around the creation and distribution of essential-filled bags. Each bag contains a granola bar, beef jerky, fruit snacks, toothbrush/toothpaste, chapstick, band-aids, facial tissue, and a bar of soap.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s truly astonishing how challenging it can be to do good in this world. Despite reaching out to numerous organizations and churches for partnerships, I’ve encountered resistance from those who wish to alter or soften the essence of my mission. Many are hesitant to confront the raw reality of places like Skid Row, fearing it may unsettle their congregations or youth. However, it’s crucial to dispel the misconception that all homeless individuals are inherently dangerous or afflicted by substance abuse. Through my monthly distribution of care packages and genuine conversations, I strive to humanize these individuals, reminding society of their inherent dignity and resilience. A simple smile and conversation can make an immense difference in their lives.
Yet, rallying others to join me in going the extra mile has proven to be the most daunting task. While I receive plenty of “support,” true backing and commitment are harder to come by. Nevertheless, amidst the challenges, I’m deeply grateful for the unwavering support, donations, and assistance in distributing essential filled bags from my incredible circle of friends and family.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So much of my dedication is poured into my nonprofit, alongside the substantial time I’ve devoted to preparing for my LSAT, which I recently completed. My ambition is to pursue law school with a focus on public health, a path that often earns me glances from other prospective law students, basically telling me I won’t make any money. However, my passion for community service and advocacy has been ingrained in me since youth. I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drum, unafraid to challenge norms, advocate for what’s right, and stand up for myself and others. While immersed in my studies, I continue to work with children, a journey that began at 14 years old as a camp counselor and evolved into roles as a babysitter, nanny, and daycare teacher. There’s an innate connection I share with children, a bond that seems to fade in adulthood but remains strong in our interactions.
What fills me with the most pride is my personal growth—the silent battles fought and conquered, known only to God and myself. Despite the relentless assault of negative thoughts, I consistently emerge victorious, refusing to let them overshadow my resilience and determination to persevere. What truly sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to authenticity. I’ve never bent to fit into societal molds or surrendered to external pressures. I remain the same spirited and impassioned individual, always ready to champion a cause or lend a helping hand.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My parents and my sister are the bedrock of who I am today—I owe them everything. Their unwavering commitment to service has shaped my own perspective profoundly. The women in my life, especially, embody resilience, ambition, and unwavering strength. My mom’s journey from humble beginnings to providing my sister and me with everything we needed to allow us to venture into medical school and law school is a testament to her resilience and determination. And my sister Mesha she’s my anchor, keeping me grounded no matter what life throws our way.
