Conversations with Loren Leblanc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loren Leblanc

Hi Loren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an emerging figurative multimedia sculptor and educator currently based in Inglewood, CA. I am an L.A. native who earned his MA degree from Arts University of Bournemouth in the south of England and his undergraduate degrees at Cal Poly Humboldt in Northern California. My current work employs a largely self taught approach, in which I fuse handheld 3D printing pen technology with traditional clay sculpting techniques to create intricate, evocative, life-sized figures and 2D illustrative paintings. My work aims to use its gestural poses and dynamic forms as a vessel of exploration for my future-focused curiosity, that is grounded by a nuanced historical interrogation of my experiential perspective as a young black artist in America.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As it is with most folks with independent careers, especially within creative fields, it has been a very difficult road to pave at times. Perhaps one of the most difficult aspects for me in particular has been following creative avenues which didn’t have clear one-to-one reference points. Attempting to trailblaze innovative approaches to artmaking while exploring various mediums is deeply rewarding, but intrinsically challenging in a myriad of ways.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating sculptural and illustrative works of figurative fine art using 3D printing pens and other materials. Since 3D pen is still a relatively new medium, not very many artists are using this medium in professional capacity and even fewer are doing so in a similar way to how my works are constructed. I also feel that compositional conjunction of concepts and materials within my works create a unique experience for viewers.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been seen by others as an outside-the-box, big-picture type of creative thinker. I grew up fascinated by the possibilities of emerging technology, as well as a having a deep reverence for the natural world.
