Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTesha Thomas.
Hi LaTesha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in California but raised in Dallas, Texas, where I embraced my identity as a student-athlete and performer. I attended Prairie view A&M. My passion for storytelling and communication led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mass communications at Paul Quinn College, the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River. This experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for education and community. I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Inc.
After earning my undergraduate degree, I continued my academic journey by obtaining two master’s degrees – one in educational leadership from Loyola Marymount University and another in curriculum and instruction from National University. I’m currently in my final year of my doctoral program at Loyola Marymount University, working toward a doctorate in educational leadership with a focus on social justice.
My professional experience is diverse and rich. I began my career in the entertainment industry, where I had the opportunity to work with notable figures such as Tom Joyner on his annual cruise, and at major networks like NBC 5 in Fort Worth-Dallas, CBS in Los Angeles, and KJLH in Inglewood. Eventually, I transitioned into education, applying the skills I honed in media to become an elementary school teacher, before moving on to teach English at the middle and high school levels. Over time, I took on leadership roles, serving as the English Department Chair and now as a school administrator focused on curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Currently, I’m excited to be partnering with two wonderful colleagues to create an online school for middle school students, which aims to provide innovative and engaging educational experiences. In my free time, I host a podcast and dabble in makeup, allowing me to express my creativity and connect with others in different ways.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely, the journey has had its share of challenges, just like any meaningful path. Transitioning from the entertainment industry to education was a significant shift however, I easily began to infuse the two which allowed me to become a master teacher.
As a Black woman in education, I embrace the unique journey of navigating misunderstandings and misconceptions. My creativity and deep passion for teaching may be perceived in various ways, but I viewed this as an opportunity to highlight my diverse qualities. As always, I joyfully embrace my individuality and the vibrant richness I bring to the educational landscape. This perspective has not only helped bridge gaps among students and colleagues but has also fostered a positive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and inspired to thrive.
I am profoundly talented and gifted in my field, driven by a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of my students and staff. My passion is a reflection of my dedication and care for the learning environment I strive to create.
It’s crucial to acknowledge that being human involves a spectrum of emotions, including passion, joy, and even frustration. Embracing these emotions is part of what makes me an effective educator. They fuel my drive for equity and inspire innovative approaches to teaching.
My journey is not just about overcoming misconceptions; it’s about redefining them. By standing firm in my identity and showcasing my work’s impact, I hope to challenge misconceptions and pave the way for more authentic recognition of the contributions of Black women in education and beyond.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an educator known for my creativity, I specialize in making learning an engaging and enjoyable experience through culturally responsive teaching and the incorporation of music. I believe that education should not only be informative but also fun and relatable, allowing students and staff to connect with the material in meaningful ways.
One of my proudest accomplishments is being the founder and creator of the annual Fitness Extravaganza at New Designs Charter School. This event is more than just a day filled with physical activity; it’s a vibrant celebration that combines fitness, games, playtime, delicious food, dance, and, most importantly, joy and laughter. Even after stepping away from the school for several years, I was thrilled to see that the Fitness Extravaganza continued, a testament to the lasting impact of our work and the community we built.
Additionally, I was honored to receive the “My Favorite Teacher Award” from Barnes & Noble in 2011. It was heartwarming to learn that one of my students saw fit to enter me into the contest by writing an essay about our time together. Winning this award reminded me that I am on the right path and reaffirmed my commitment to inspiring my students.
What sets me apart from others is my dedication to blending education with creativity and cultural relevance, making learning accessible and enjoyable for all my students and staff. FUN is my middle name. To me learning must be fun! My vibrant and engaging personality, coupled with my authenticity, allows me to connect genuinely with both students and staff. I strive to create environments where everyone feels valued and understood, and I take immense pride in the relationships I build with them. These meaningful interactions define my purpose as an educator and fuel my passion for nurturing the next generation.
Moreover, I believe in the power of collaboration and inclusivity, often seeking input from my students and staff to shape the learning experience. By doing so, I not only empower them but also cultivate a classroom and work atmosphere that encourages curiosity and exploration. This is the “spark that lights the dark”. Every day, I’m reminded of the privilege it is to contribute to growth and development of others and I am continually inspired by their resilience and creativity.
What matters most to you?
My journey as an educational leader is deeply rooted in love and my ancestry—an enduring legacy that lives within me. I believe that the parts of my ancestors, both blood-related and beyond, flow through my veins, guiding and inspiring me every day. The teachings of my parents, grandparents, extended family and mentors empower me to create and nurture an environment where everyone can thrive.
The stories of my people, my tribe, fuel my passion for education and remind me of the profound responsibility I carry to uplift others. Through my work, I strive to pass on the strength and knowledge bestowed upon me, forging connections that bridge the past and present.
I am committed to not only imparting knowledge but also fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among the people I teach and lead. I want them to know that they are part of something greater—a legacy of resilience and growth. By cultivating mentorship and guidance, I hope to inspire my students and staff to embrace their own stories and become beacons of light for future generations.
This is my why: to honor my ancestors, empower my students, and nurture the next wave of thinkers, creators, and leaders who will carry our shared legacy forward.
