Conversations with L.m. Skye

Today we’d like to introduce you to L.m. Skye

Hi L.M., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been an avid reader since childhood and loved writing stories. However, I became inspired to write a novel when I lived in West Hollywood. The neighborhood is so rich and vibrant, with so many people and stories melding together; it was the perfect place for my creativity to flourish. I lived off of Robertson Boulevard, and my favorite thing to do was sit at the cafe Cuvee (now closed) and people-watch! That’s where I dreamt up my stories and characters for my debut novels FALLING: An LA Love Story and FALLING: The Missing Chapters, which are both part of a duet. The manuscript sat untouched and unfinished for a few years, but I was drawn to revisit it a few years ago and committed myself to finishing it until I finally published it earlier this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing novels has not been a smooth road. I experienced a lot of imposter syndrome and self-doubt during this process. I constantly doubted myself, which is why I abandoned the project less than halfway through. However, I was inspired by all of the Indie published authors who are taking their novels across the finish line, so that’s what I pushed myself to do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a writer! My stories focus on themes of love, loss, and friendship and also tackle “heavier” subject matter like toxic relationships, addiction, and the challenges of young adulthood. I think that’s what sets me apart from most romance writers: My stories are grittier and darker than most “feel-good” romance fiction. However, they also have a lot of heart, passion, and happy endings. I’m most proud of publishing them this year because there was a time I doubted that I ever would.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding mentors and a community as a writer can be challenging because the process is very personal and isolating. However, it’s important to push yourself to attend local events for writers, such as workshops and book signings. Social media is also a great place to network and connect with people in the writing community.
