Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaulyn Lee-McNeill

Hi Kaulyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My background is in the music industry. Growing up, I knew I would always work in art or entertainment given how passionate I was about it. I was also always passionate about scent and curating moods and spaces. Over the past 4 years I tapped into this passion by experimenting in my kitchen creating candles.

As I embarked on building my brand I knew I wanted to change the candle industry as I felt it was rather boring and stale. I noticed that every candle company looked and acted the same and essentially offered the same thing in a “different” package. That is where I got the idea to combine scent and sound by curating a unique playlist to pair with each candle. I love discovering new music and supporting up and coming artists. So this inspired me to create the vision for Algorhythm Candle Studio. But what sets my brand apart is the secret beneath the vessel. Nestled discreetly on the bottom of each candle lies a hidden treasure—a unique QR code. With a simple scan, you unlock a gateway to a curated music playlist that perfectly complements the essence of the candle you hold in your hands. My playlists are carefully curated to resonate with the mood, theme, or inspiration behind each fragrance, creating a harmonious union of scent and sound. Not only this but each vessel is designed with a slight indent on the side as you can up-cycle your candle into your favorite coffee mug after the burn.

I launched in January of 2024 and have been building ever since! My goal is to change the candle industry by adding music and sustainability to what feels like an archaic business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I am still in the building process since launching at the top of this year. Summer has been very slow and it has been difficult to stay motivated. I wiped my life savings to launch the business and it takes time to become profitable but I have faith that Algorhythm will take off soon!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I definitely feel like I am a creative myself. I love helping artists find their voice and grow. It’s not easy making it as an artist in the music business so helping foster up and coming talent in any way I can is something I am passionate about and continue to work on.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is marketing is so important!! It’s one thing to launch a company, but if you do not have the marketing and story to tell behind what you are selling it becomes very difficult. Also trust your instincts! When launching a company, your friends, family and everyone will come out of the word-works giving you their 2 cents about what you should do, how you should run your business etc. Although they mean well, you have to trust your own instincts on what is best for the company. You also have to understand that the majority of the people giving you advice have never launched a company before. So be mindful who you listen to as you grow.
