Conversations with Jonathan Dre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Dre.

Hi Jonathan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a 34-year-old, Los Angeles-based nail artist originally from Fresno, CA. I’ve been dabbling in the art of nails since I was eight years old but didn’t decide to pursue it as a career until 2019.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I struggled a lot with coming to terms with what I wanted to pursue as a career all throughout my 20s. I always knew I wanted to be creative, but to be honest…. I avoided doing nails due to my not fully accepting my identity as a queer individual. I had a fear of being “that stereotypical gay”. It wasn’t until I reached my late 20s, working several jobs I loathed and finding the beauty in my queer identity….. something just clicked….. I should be doing my nails and having my nails done. It’s my superpower.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a nail artist. I specialize in acrylics, structured gel manicures, and aesthetic nail designs. I’d say I’m most known for my attention to detail. Honestly….. I’m really proud of how much growth I’ve had in the last four years of my being in this industry. I think what sets me apart is my versatility in my style. When my clients give me creative control….. I’d say it’s my best work.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
First off, I always say….. don’t pursue doing nails if you don’t love it. Secondly….. surround yourself with other talented artists and figure out what techniques/products work best for you. Soak up all the knowledge you can. And last but not least……. Just PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
