Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Kozena.
Hi Jenny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began designing in the UK, where I grew up, eventually expanding my studies and projects to the US. My background isn’t just in design; I also have a degree in psychology from NYU, which I believe adds depth to my work by considering the emotional impact of spaces.
I believe every space has a story to tell and a way that it should make you feel and that my role as an interior designer is to translate that narrative into an authentic and harmonious design.
I live in Malibu and have found a home in the community there. After spending time there, I got to know more about its history, which made the project of designing the Clubhouse a natural fit, as the owners wanted a design that reflected Malibu’s essence.
The design of the clubhouse isn’t just about aesthetics but also the values. It represents the old Malibu, reminding people why they moved to this coastal paradise. The Clubhouse is about our connection to nature, the sea, and most importantly, to each other.
I put a lot of thought into the design to create a sense of belonging and unity among creatives, entrepreneurs, and surfers. The layout of the clubhouse was carefully crafted to foster connection – from the common area where people can interact to the private office spaces that provide solitude when needed.
The clubhouse was also created to encourage a balanced lifestyle as it offers an all-hours haven where you can transition from surfing to answering emails to hosting workshops and gatherings in a setting that perfectly integrates work and play.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was an enjoyable challenge to capture the essence of a place and its history and to create a space where the laid-back spirit of surf culture harmoniously coexists with the demands of professional life. We used wood paneling from classic surf shacks, vintage elements intertwined with earthy textures and colors, like the natural weave wallpaper with subtle hints of green and green ceilings that echoed the mountainous and coastal landscape, and we created a nostalgic vintage atmosphere which still caters to modern work needs and responsibilities.
By blending vintage elements with modern touches, we created a harmonious space that celebrates the past while embracing the present. Comfortable sofas and ergonomic work tables welcome you to both unwind or get to work, depending on your needs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My portfolio includes a range of projects from commercial to residential; clubhouses, restaurants, large homes and tiny homes. Regardless of what the project is, I always aim for authenticity and root each design to the location so it reflects its setting. Understanding the client’s needs is at the heart of what I do. I try to craft spaces where every detail becomes a cherished memory, meticulously chosen to create an enduring bond with the space.
While my foundation is in interior design, my work and artistic expression extend far beyond that. My deep dive into ceramics, sculpture, glass blowing, and woodworking offers a diverse range of mediums through which I can weave intricate new narratives.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am very excited to share my new venture! I am working on creating a home decor and furniture collection that showcases timeless elegance and craftsmanship. I will bring my signature style to each piece. The home decor and furniture line is set to be unveiled at the end of this year under the name Clay House.
