Conversations with Jeff Fowler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Fowler.

Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like so many of my fellow Angelenos, I moved here several years ago to pursue my creative dreams. Acting was my original focus. Armed with a Thomas Guide and fax machine, I drove around the city in an old Datsun auditioning for everything I could. Eventually, I turned to writing and recording music—a form of artistic expression that did not require a reliable car or someone to hire me. I have been independently releasing music for 15 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like anyone who commits to an art form, I have had times of great productivity and other times where I was just terribly distracted, uninspired, or needing to focus on a day job to pay the bills. Through it all, I’ve learned that the darker moments are part of the voyage—they are the engine that inspires us. I’m also inspired by this great city we live in. It’s such a diverse palate that has given birth to so much incredible music. I feel so lucky and proud to be part of LA.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am presently focused on a new video project I call The Fowlerwood Sessions. It is a series of live recording sessions—some original songs, some covers—showcasing some of my favorite musicians and friends. The songs, videos, and even some behind-the-scenes moments are all available to stream and watch. The project involves many collaborators: musicians, filmmakers, and digital marketing experts. Working with these folks has been so invigorating and inspiring. And the team’s commitment to a regular release schedule has propelled me to produce music much more consciously and intentionally than ever before.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
That historic moment in March 2020—when the Covid-19 crisis led to the entire world to shelter at home—was a wake-up call for me. Suddenly, time was more precious. I realized that if I did not do a better job of focusing on my goals, I would squander them. I started before the advent of social media, and I had not been naturally inclined to use it to push my music. But the pandemic changed that. Like many musicians, I started posting music videos on YouTube and collaborating on recordings remotely. The silver lining of the pandemic was it forced me to branch out and realize how fortunate we are in this era to have so many outlets to share our music.
