Conversations with Javier Amaya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Amaya.

Javier, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
What’s up my name is Javier Amaya born and raised in Virgil Village LA. Im 26 years old and I’ve been shooting film photos and creating for about 8 years now. I started off by going to rap shows at Rarehouse back in the day, I would just be a regular concert goer just getting footage and photos on my phone and being so excited to see what it looked like and the end of the show. Slowly I got a disposable camera and started taking it more serious. Seeing how close and acceptable it was to take pictures of people I listened to every day and small show was something that really caught my eye.
As time went on I started to meet more talented people and showing my photos at art shows like Los Angeles Nights , Film & Friends, & SuperChief. These events really helped me grow as a person and artist seeing how there’s a whole scene curated by great artist, especially when I was first starting to show my photos because the talent range and popularity really didn’t matter if you have cool stuff to show put it up and see how people take it in.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it’s been a pretty smooth ride through my career doing this I’ve learned, lot met a lot of great people, and have also travelled because I take photos

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I really enjoy to take street photos, everyday life photos pretty much just showcase what I see thru the lens. Concert photos was definitely where I started and is what gave me the confidence to take more everyday stuff and also set up some shoots with my friends I really enjoy making them look cool that’s my favorite part of it all. Ill say always trying to be at the right spot right time has been something that sets me apart where it’s driving 2 hours to a show or a photo shoot to being able to get someone crowd surfing at a concert. It’s all about just being out and about.

How do you think about happiness?
Seeing my friends check out the photos I take of them when I send them the photos after I take a photo of them will forever be my favorite thing about what I do. Especially since I shoot on film sometimes that photo might take a day or it can take 2 months just depending how often or if I even want to develop the roll of film
