Conversations with Jaclyn Fleming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Fleming.

Hi Jaclyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Toronto, ON Canada. I began preforming, initially as a singer, but my heart was always with performing and acting. I began at The Second City and it just grew from there. I came out to LA for a showcase and I knew that I wanted to move here, so I worked towards it and here I am!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t imagine people often consider the entertainment industry easy or have a “smooth road”. All of my friends and the lovely people I’ve gotten to know over time, all have had some struggle in their journey. I’ve had to face a lot of closed doors, like many, a countless “not the right time” or “not the right fit”. I try not to think about the no and focus on learning from everything and growing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor, writer and director. I work in theatre and Film&Television. I’ve been on Cartoons, such as, We Bare Bears, and I do a lot of comedy. That’s how I began, as mentioned before, doing Improv. It lead me to doing sketch and eventually doing some clowning, which I adore.

Most recently, I decided to go back to film and creating projects. My film “Are You There?” has been touring in Festivals. It’s been nominated now for 7 awards and won 1. It’s about to be screened internationally in Australia, which is wild to think about!

I would say I’m proud of all of the work I’ve been doing, but the films I’ve been a part of this year and last really have been such a highlight for me. Not just due to having awards or festival considerations, but because I can connect with people in other cities, countries and places.

I don’t know if this sets me apart from anyone, but I don’t wait for approval. I spent a lot of time hoping for others to approve of me, growing up and to “fit in”. I don’t need other people to tell me I’m good enough to have fire in me to make my dreams my reality. If I listened to every disparaging comment or remark, I wouldn’t do anything. I wouldn’t have moved my life to another country where I barely knew anyone. I wouldn’t keep dreaming and seeking to create.

What matters most to you? Why?
Creating and working with creative people is vital to me. Working with other incredible people, so we can make magic or the illusion of it. It drives me. I love seeing how things are done on a broken down level, so that it becomes the whole picture. I love learning about what others do and how they do it, so I can support them. I love bringing people together or being in a mix of people who are driven by fun, joy and greatness.
