Conversations with Greyson Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greyson Thomas

Hi Greyson, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for photography and videography really started when I was a young kid. Me and my brother (and mom) would make surf films growing up. Going early, before school, to get the best light and the least crowd. From there I went to San Diego State and found a crew of guys throwing little shows around town at different bars and venues. Since I love music, had a camera, and was willing to help out it wasn’t hard to get that foot in the door to start building a portfolio. After all with photography it’s all about your portfolio in order to get press passes but the only way to get a good portfolio is with a press pass. A classic catch 22. Ever since school in San Diego I haven’t stopped shooting, and little by little you get better gig, start to value your work. Now I am have had the chance to shoot at places like EDC, Lightning In a bottle, Hard Summer, Ibiza, and many more. When I am not pursuing concerts I manage our Photo Studio “The Commune Club”. Renting out to brands and photographers. A space to get creative. I am not where I want to be yet but the ball is rolling. With photography, if there is a will, there’s a way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. I’m not sure it ever really is. Late nights and quick turn arounds are the easy parts. Putting yourself out there and giving it your all is hard. Getting gigs and projects is hard. Nothing about concert photography is for the faint of heart. Getting gigs early on especially is tough. Constant networking. Then there is self doubt and how to value your work. A plethora of struggles. You just got to do it. Passion over everything.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in concert photography and live events. I shoot for a lot of artists both big and small at different electronic music genres and festivals. I am most proud to just be able to do what I do along with the fact that I never gave up. I also run a photo studio called the “The Commune Club”. If I had to say what I think what sets me apart from others I think it’s my use of color, light, symmetry. But who’s to say? Not me.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The best thing about LA is all the events, all the food, and the weather. I hate percentage of trash cans around to trash.
