Conversations with Giovanni Rubio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanni Rubio.

Hi giovanni, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I initiated my artistic journey at a young age, drawing cartoon characters during my adolescent years. As a teenager, I became deeply influenced by graffiti and Chicano culture. As a first-generation college student from a family of Mexican immigrants, I attended a local art school, where I earned a BFA in Digital Media and a Single Subject Teaching Credential. This distinctive experience has shaped my personal art practice as a commercial graphic designer and teaching artist.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My artistic journey has been a transformative path, and one of the major opportunities for growth has been discovering my unique artistic voice. As a Los Angeles-based artist, I’m excited to carve out my own niche and make a meaningful impact.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multi media artist however I specialize in print making. I am celebrated for creating high contrast graphic images that vibrantly represent the chicano culture through iconic symbols like lowriders & shoes. I am most proud of the transformative community work that I do as a teaching artist. I firmly believe that my commitment to social responsibility is what sets me apart from others, driving me to craft art curriculums that empower the community rather than merely focusing on visually stunning images like most artists do.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have been blessed luckily with an incredible support network from family and mentors that inspires me every day.
