Conversations with Frank Hegyi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Hegyi.

Hi Frank, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story begins on a cold night on the South China Sea. My parents were notorious pirates in the 1970’s, but after a life threatening run in with the British navy, they adopted new identities and lived out the rest of their lives peacefully in Brunei. Even so, the open sea occasionally called to them, so I happened to be born on a tiny stretch of ocean roughly 50 nautical miles west of Manila that is technically a US territory, so I was accidentally born an American citizen. I was unaware of this until my early thirties, but as soon as I found out, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams in Hollywood.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The culture shock was pretty intense, but I’ve learned to love America. People around the world know your country mostly through glossy Hollywood film, but in reality, America is a brutal, merciless society (which I find strangely comforting given my pirate heritage).

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a filmmaker. My most recent project is a feature length documentary called Celebrity Caregiver from executive producers Werner Herzog and Nathan Fielder. It has been divisive among early audiences, but the core is one of empathy and hope, a demented cinderella story. Your audience should be on the look out for a trailer soon. We are lucky to have a limited theatrical release planned and streaming after that.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I don’t speak about my unique citizenship very often, so Voyage LA has a bit of an exclusive there.
