Conversations with Eileen Hayman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen Hayman

Hi Eileen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began with a love for fashion that started back in fifth grade when I dreamed of becoming a designer. I was always fascinated by how people express themselves through clothing, and that passion stayed with me as I grew. Although I eventually found myself in a secure and interesting role in biotech research, I felt the need for a more creative outlet. With the financial freedom my biotech job provided, I was able to launch ELY the Label without the immediate pressure that many entrepreneurs face.

This stability allowed me to invest in my brand, take my time with the creative process, and learn the business side without rushing. It gave me the freedom to focus on building something meaningful and impactful, rather than worrying about making quick returns. This balance has been crucial in helping me bring my vision for ELY to life while still continuing my busy full-time job.

ELY was born from my desire to channel my creativity and empower women through fashion, offering chic, flattering, and sporty pieces perfect for game days and beyond. The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, as I’ve learned the ins and outs of entrepreneurship while designing clothes that help women feel confident and amazing. With a strong support system and a deep passion for creativity, I’m excited to continue growing ELY and seeing where it leads.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning the ropes of the fashion industry while juggling my full-time job in biotech. Coming from a science background with no prior business experience, everything from building a website, sourcing fabrics, to handling business logistics and legalities has been a steep learning curve. I’ve invested a lot of time and energy into learning each step of the way.

Another major struggle has been managing my time and energy. Balancing both my biotech job and running ELY the Label is demanding. My days are spent working on biotech projects, and my evenings and weekends are dedicated to designing, coordinating with manufacturers, and running the business. It’s been a challenge to keep up with both without burning out.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My brand, ELY the Label, is a women’s streetwear brand that combines chic, flattering basics with edgy, sporty pieces. We specialize in creating versatile clothing that empowers women to feel confident and stylish, whether they’re at a sports game, out for a night on the town, or lounging at home. What sets us apart is our focus on combining comfort with style. We’re known for our flattering bodysuits that sculpt the body and our ‘Here for the Tailgate’ collection, which offers an alternative to the oversized jerseys that women often wear on game days. Our pieces are designed to be ultra-thin, breathable, and buttery soft, making them a staple in any wardrobe.

I’m most proud of the way our brand resonates with women who wear our clothing. Hearing feedback from customers who feel empowered and confident in our pieces is success to me. I want your readers to know that ELY is more than just a fashion brand— it’s about creating a community where women feel uplifted and supported. Our collections range from game day fits to cozy loungewear, activewear, street-chic pants, and everyday bodysuit staples, all designed with quality and style in mind. ELY is for women who love sports, fashion, and comfort, and who want to look and feel amazing in everything they wear.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
From a business standpoint, I wasn’t affected by the Covid-19 crisis since I hadn’t launched ELY the Label yet. At the time, I was working in healthcare as an essential worker, so I continued working throughout the shutdowns. While my business wasn’t impacted directly, seeing how the pandemic affected industries, especially fashion, taught me the importance of being adaptable and building a strong online presence from the start. It reinforced the idea that flexibility is key, and it prepared me for potential challenges I could face down the road.
