Conversations with Edolia Stroud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edolia Stroud.

Hi Edolia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography has always been my main artistic outlet for me to bring my creative ideas to life as well as being able to tell a story from my point of view visually. Growing up, I’ve always struggled with finding the words to describe how I view the world around me as well as my own thoughts and visions. Being a visual artist has helped me to be able to express my thoughts, feelings and my perspective of life. The end result is always immensely rewarding to be able to bring my visions into reality. There’s no environment I feel most like myself when I am creating and I’m so grateful for my team each time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a legally blind photographer, I’ve grown up struggling to see the world around me. My disability has made it difficult to learn and live in general. Art has always been an important part of my life and the main source I use to not only express who I am but represent who I am from the inside out. Photography has always been the medium I truly thrive in most which inspire me to create images in film, digital and even mixed media.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a creative director and photographer from Brooklyn, New York. Working in the mediums of both photography and collage, my work explores themes of female identity. My narrative fine artwork weave images together telling emotional stories through portraiture, still life and documentary and my fashion work exudes playfulness with a focus on color.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Being a part of Black Women Photographers, I feel I have found a mentor through Polly Irungu. Her support and endorsement has been a constant inspiring and positive factor in my career as an artist. I am forever grateful for what she has done for the industry and how she has paved the way for so many black women.
