Conversations with Donavan Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donavan Robinson

Hi Donavan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In March 2021 I had a really rough year. I was going through a really bad break up. On top of that my mom just moved to Atlanta with my siblings and I was staying with my grandparents. Lastly COVID 19 hit and shocked the world. I felt like I was taking hit after hit after hit and I was tired of just sitting on my ass and not doing anything about it. I had a friend named Chris who takes film photos and hanging with him one day we found ourselves at the Fairfax flea market to get him a new camera. I ended up leaving with a film camera too. I had no idea what I was doing and he really put me on a lot of game. I slowly started to shoot friends/family while also making a ton of mistakes. Eventually I saved up enough money for a digital camera and ever since I’ve been shooting any and everything I can get my hands on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No not at all lol. I’ve ruined dozens almost Hundreds of film rolls, lost sd cards, broken a lens just to get another one and ended up buying the wrong one. Life would be really boring if the road was smooth tho. I’ve learned the mistakes and challenges that I have made it through have made me the person and photographer that I am. I had to make A bunch of mistakes to learn how i wanted to take photos. The only real struggles I can say I have had are being consistent. It is really hard to do so and also live life and handle responsiblities. But practice makes things a lot easier.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do a handful of things but i feel like they all connect one or another. For starters I got to school for film production right now. Learning to be a lighting tech so I can eventually become a Director of Photography. I work for the Black Flea Market doing pre production and ticketing. I also do production for A church. Lastly I work at an elementary school as an aide teaching kids of science and aerospace.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Take care of your mental health because everything we do and a lot of choices we make starts with our mindset.
