Conversations with DJ Laurencio

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Laurencio

Hi DJ, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The LA Rugby Club’s journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and sportsmanship. Known as the oldest Rugby Club in Los Angeles, from its inception in 1958, it has grown to become a cornerstone of the Los Angeles sports community, fostering a love for rugby across generations. The Youth Division’s establishment in 2018 marked a new chapter, introducing the sport to young enthusiasts and shaping the future of rugby in the region.

My involvement since 2019 has not only enriched my son’s athletic abilities and skills, but also contributed significantly to the club’s operations and camaraderie. Stepping into the Youth Director role in 2023, I’ve embraced the challenges and unpredictability of managing sports events, which is no small feat. My adaptability and commitment to the club have strengthened its foundation and expanded its reach within the Southern California Youth Rugby League. Serving on the Disciplinary Board is a clear indication of the respect and trust I’ve earned within the rugby community. My story is one of dedication, learning, and leadership, reflecting the core values that make rugby more than just a game, but a unifying force of family for all involved.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Stepping into the Youth Director role has been quite a journey, with its fair share of challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles has been securing centralized field space for our training sessions. Since Youth Rugby hasn’t yet established a strong foothold in LA, many fields are already allocated to other youth sports.

Another significant challenge is the shortage of Rugby Coaches in the area. Similar to AYSO, we are a volunteer-run organization, and most of our coaches are working parents, like myself, juggling multiple schedules.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of Rugby, I am employed in the IT industry as a Systems Analyst, focused on Database Systems integrations and AWS, ensuring seamless data management and cloud services.

Additionally, I am the silent partner of an event planning business, Kaylani Cupcake Events and Soirées, and “Momager” for my daughter’s acting/modeling appearances.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
