Conversations with Delton Valentine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delton Valentine

Hi Delton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From belting Disney songs as a kid to diving deep into sci-fi and fantasy as a teen, my love for storytelling has been unstoppable. After high school, I got my first professional break as a Production Assistant on Eastsiders and hustled my way to a producer credit on the Netflix series. Since then, I’ve teamed up with my creative partner Remy to launch Little Boy Blue Productions, where we just wrapped our short film Y2Kevin, now submitted in the festival circuit. Exciting times ahead, and I’m always open to collaborating on new projects!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to where I am has never been easy. As a gay person of color, the opportunities being offered to me were sparse. Most times I’m creating the jobs I’ve done since I don’t have a long professional resume. My adult life required a job and I couldn’t afford taking internships or assistant jobs below minimum wage. Not to mention I’d gone back to school 3 years ago for my Bachelor’s degree so there’s even less free time available.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creative producing, line producing on set and script coverage for multimedia projects. I’m most proud of our Y2Kevin short because it encompasses all the work I’m capable of. I helped craft the character arcs from scripting, managing the budget, 2 day shooting schedule, and supervised the entire post production. I performed these tasks all while remembering the story comes first and supporting my crew to do their best work.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding mentors has been difficult for me personally. I find mentorship to be deeply important especially for men, but I haven’t found any groups or person who in the industry offering something enticing. The only organization I’ve found any interest in applying for is the Hillman Grad program from Lena Waithe. As far as networking, I’ve found using Instagram to and IMDB as a great resource to try connecting with other creatives. I definitely follow Issa Rae’s advice of networking with your peers more so than leaders in your field. There’s room to grow and learn together.
