Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jester.
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I left Corporate and started painting 7 years ago and it was the best decision for me personally. I love painting and it has been rewarding. I paint every day for 10 – 12 hours and wouldn’t have it any other way
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was defintiely scary and rough at first. Painting is one of the longest forms of storytelling so it took a long while to develop a body of work people could see and for some appreciate. Art is competitive, not with other artists but in garnering attention, there is just so much of it out there. It took about 2 years of marketing to gain traction and start selling, doing interviews, shows, books. I would tell anyone thinking of doing it to keep your head down and put the time in, have patience and things will start to develop
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I guess the most recognizable would be a series of pool paintings I did. In it I explored the isolated world of the pool and used it to highlight my gay friends, how the pool is part of the larger world yet seperate and how that relates to being gay. I made 200 oils, sold almost all of them and have one in Leslie Lohman Museum. Currently I am doing a series about aging in the culture. I think whatever you do, authenticity is the most important thing.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was quiet, and preferred drawing to running around outside. It has served me well for Art. I grew up in San Diego but was born in Palm Springs
