Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Medel
Hi Danny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
DIRTY DISKO:
Born and raised in East Los Angeles, I grew up surrounded by the vibrant energy of the city. My mom, Yolanda, worked tirelessly to provide for me, and I have endless gratitude for her sacrifices. My parents separated when I was young, and I didn’t get to see my dad as often as I would’ve liked. However, when I did see him, I was fascinated by his free-spirited nature and his passion for riding motorcycles. He was a biker, and I admired his sense of adventure and independence.
My early years were spent playing with neighbor kids and attending Humphreys Elementary, where my curiosity and creativity first began to flourish. As I entered high school at Garfield, my passion for music began to take center stage. I was initially drawn to heavy metal music, reveling in the aggressive riffs, pounding drums, and raw energy of bands like system of a down, Ozzy, and Iron Maiden, Linkin Park. This genre spoke to me on a deep level, and I spent hours listening to their albums, feeling the music course through my veins.
However, as I grew older, my musical tastes began to evolve. I discovered the EDM scene and became captivated by the infectious beats, mesmerizing synths, and electrifying energy of house music. I joined a dance crew, where I earned the nickname “Disko” for my energetic and charismatic stage presence.
My experience as a dancer ultimately led me to DJing, and I adopted the moniker DJ Dirty Disko. A pivotal moment in my career came when I was featured on an NBC Radio EDM show hosted by the legendary Fred. Fred became a mentor to me, inspiring me to learn the ins and outs of radio broadcasting. His guidance not only honed my skills but also gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams.
To complement my new persona, I created a distinctive disco ball mask that I wore to my shows. Initially, the mask served as a practical precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was afraid of getting sick from the infection, and the mask provided me with a sense of security and protection. However, over time, the mask became an iconic symbol of my brand, and I’m thrilled to see how it resonates with my audience.
During the pandemic, I continued to perform, adapting to the new landscape and finding innovative ways to connect with my fans. Despite facing financial struggles and living in a big city, my family’s resilience and determination inspired me to pursue my dreams.
As I explored other passions, including film directing, acting, dancing, and art, my love for Y2K fashion also became a defining aspect of my personal style.
Through my journey, I’ve learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability. Watching my family overcome adversity and thrive has taught me that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
Today, as a devoted father to my son, my goals are clearer than ever. I strive to succeed as a DJ and music producer, performing for large crowds and making a name for myself in the industry. But more than that, I’m driven by the desire to provide the best possible life for my son and to be a role model he can look up to.
With every step forward, I remain committed to staying true to myself, pursuing my passions, and making a positive impact on the world around me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
