Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Broomba.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts in Detroit. Quickly after high school, it was pretty clear I had to get to one of the giant cities in this country and play music at the grandest of scales. Since the idea of shoveling snow was no longer appetizing, I eventually landed in Long Beach.
Four boys in a two bed/ two bath, traveling around in a giant cargo van, spray painted with our band logo. A few tours, Warped, SXSW, and countless new friends later, we found ourselves a trio living in a motorhome in somebody’s driveway. This made us all reprioritize. The rhythm section started up a successful merch/ print shop, and I started taking paid gigs and joining various projects.
A few years passed, and the itch became no longer scratchable. It was due time I reconnected with my hometown brothers. We found a better, healthier foundation for creativity and teamwork to thrive. This marks the first release from Filmspeed. Life intervened for our first drummer, and he is currently a professor of astrophysics.
2017 we saw the release of “Hexadecimal”. This was the 3rd full LP which featured 1/2 material from our 2nd drummer, who sat at the helm for about three years prior, and 1/2 from our current and longest-serving backbone.
Now as Craig, Nick, and Oliver, we caught a different level of stride. Numerous regional tours, a trip up through Vancouver and back, NHL and MLB performances in-game, features at NAMM, rad Spotify placements, and so much more than we’ve expected to achieve.
Covid slapped us around just like everyone else. With the state of live music in peril and no clear end in sight, we took matters into our own hands. This led to the creation of Sixhand Studio; an ex garage turned multimedia creation space. We planned, hand-built, and utilized everything from floor to ceiling to all the gear, ready at turnkey. It serves as our recording studio, podcast HQ, video shoot location, and sanctuary.
Our latest album, “No More Rules” is slated for release on October 13th. It’s a wild and focused representation of the last three years. Written, recorded, edited, and mixed by the three members themselves in their own space and time. You’ll begin to see a single release once a month until the album is fully out. You’re also going to see a slew of official videos to support the record. We’re currently planning the album release show and entertaining options to hit the road.
In the meantime, you can check in on us, and usually a guest with plenty to say once a week on the “Consistently Off’ podcast. It’s about 90 min episodes full of conversation that could (and does) lead anywhere.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Music is my thing. It’s what I’m most qualified to do and the only job that satisfies me. With or without a super-talented and highly explosive band like Filmspeed, you would still find me on the promenade belting out a banger. I’ve been in it for so long that I can take a song request via Post-it note and get you about 80% studio version without having looked at the music before.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Besides my obsession with pizza and sloths, I was a teenage emo sensation, complete with a lip ring, and two-toned hair.
