Today we’d like to introduce you to Coco Lafousfous.
Hi Coco, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began when I moved out to Los Angeles, after leaving the small town from which I was from, A theater and Dance kid fresh out of College; and trying to find myself. As I was looking for Dance classes, I came across Aeriform Arts Aerial & Pole Studio. I signed up for a class as a birthday present to myself, having no clue how it would change my life. My first class was much like any beginner, I couldn’t do a pull-up or spin or even touch my toes. But I was in love. After my ten classes were up, I immediately applied to be a work-study student. Taking as many classes as I possibly could and pushing myself further and further. I eventually crossed over into teaching Aerial Hammock, Silks, Aerial hoop (Lyra), Cube and assisting other teachers however I was able. Next, I began to compete and perform locally in the aerial community, meeting more and more wonderful performers and teachers wherever I go. Almost ten years after my first aerial class I am living my dream. I’ve gotten to work with former Cirque du Soleil Artists on original Aerial ballets at Aeriform Arts. I am performing live and across the teaching workshops country. I am a member of the Wisconsin-based Torch Sisters, where I’ve most recently begun performing using fire. And I’ve started competing in international burlesque competitions. Look out world, here comes Mz. Coco LaFousFous
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
TW: Grief
One of my biggest struggles in life has been self-confidence. I’ve often found myself comparing my achievements to others’ or getting so caught up in goals that I don’t always notice when I’ve moved the goalpost. It’s also been immensely difficult to believe in myself after the passing of a close colleague and closer friend during the 2020 pandemic. Losing a big inspiration in my life as well as someone who believed so much in me has been a difficult adjustment. While some days are easier than others, I keep going because of her. To carry on all the joy she was able to give me. RIP
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work primarily as an Aerial Dance teacher and performer. But when I keep my feet on the ground, I perform flow arts using props such as Veil Fans, Hula Hoops, Veil Wings, and Fire. I am also known for my unique Aerial ballets, using aerial choreography to tell a story in a live theater setting. I have also dabbled in self-portraiture as well as video editing my digital performances.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the wonderful taste of Los Angeles. LA has some of the best food around and it’ll be vegan. Which as someone who hates to cook has been a real blessing for my taste buds,
But seriously, the people are by and far the greatest part of Los Angeles. I’ve found such wonderful friendships from folks from all backgrounds and lives. And no matter how long I spend in this great place, I feel like I never have enough time to spend with the fabulous people.
