Conversations with Classique516

Today we’d like to introduce you to Classique516.

Hi Classique516, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started on Long Island, New York, where I first picked up the violin at seven years old and began teaching myself to play by ear. Music became my language before I even understood its full power. Growing up, I didn’t have formal training or direction, but I had curiosity, persistence, and a deep love for sound. Those early days shaped everything about who I am as an artist.

As I got older, I began blending genres that spoke to me, Hip-Hop and R&B with classical under tones creating a sound that felt honest and limitless. Along the way, I was blessed with mentors like my middle school teacher, Ms. Oween Davis, who helped me find confidence in my gift and encouraged me to step into the spotlight. That faith led me to win Showtime at the Apollo three times and perform on stages around the world, where I’ve been able to connect with audiences through my unique mix of strings, p, and storytelling.

My journey eventually led to a Grammy nomination as an artist participant on a project by Kevin Powell and a collaboration with two-time Grammy-nominated poet Queen Sheba. Both experiences reminded me of how powerful art can be when it’s rooted in authenticity and collaboration.

Beyond performing, I’m also an author and curator. My debut book “ATELOPHOBIA” was released alongside my album “ATELOPHOBIA: The Plight of Ostinato”, both exploring vulnerability, perseverance, and self-discovery. Since 2017, I’ve curated an annual event series that celebrates creativity and community highlighting artists who bring originality and courage to their craft.

Everything I’ve built is grounded in freedom, the freedom to create, to express, and to inspire. My story is still being written, but at its core, it’s about resilience, integrity, and the belief that art can heal, unite, and transform.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey has been full of lessons, challenges, and moments that tested my confidence and faith in what I do. Early on, I faced criticism and judgment from traditionally trained classical string musicians who didn’t quite understand my fusion of styles, as well as from people in certain artistic spaces who felt the violin didn’t belong there. On top of that, being a Black woman from an urban neighborhood, it was rare to see string players who looked like me, especially playing at my level. That sometimes made me feel out of place or unseen, even when I was giving my all.

As an entrepreneur and independent artist, the challenges haven’t stopped there. Building something from the ground up and staying true to a vision that not everyone can see or believe in is far from easy. I had to work extremely hard to create a name for myself, show up in spaces that didn’t always feel welcoming, and keep going even after hearing “no” more times than I can count. But each of those experiences strengthened me, sharpened my purpose, and made every “yes” that much more meaningful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist, musician, singer-songwriter, writer, and curator whose work lives at the crossroads of Hip-Hop, R&B, and classical under tones. I’m best known for blending heartfelt lyrics, passionate vocals, production, and intricate string compositions to create a sound that’s both boundary-breaking and deeply human. As a self-taught violinist, composer, and producer, I’ve spent years crafting music that reflects my cultural roots, personal experiences, and love for authenticity. I’m also known for my free spirited improvisation during my live performances and appearances.

As a songwriter, I take great pride in my lyrics and storytelling as they’re an extension of my vulnerability and truth. Every song I write is a piece of my journey, a moment of honesty that allows me to connect with listeners on a real level. Beyond music, I’m also an author and the curator of an annual event series that celebrates diverse artists and fosters community through creativity, collaboration, and cultural dialogue.

I’m most proud of how my work continues to inspire others, especially young musicians of color who can now see themselves represented in spaces where we’ve often been overlooked. What sets me apart is my fearless approach to blending genres, my integrity as a creator, and my commitment to using art as a tool for healing, unity, and self-discovery.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
One of my favorite books is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho it’s both eye-opening and deeply motivational. Every time I read it, I’m reminded of what’s possible when you trust your path, stay open to life’s lessons, and believe in divine timing. It’s helped shape how I approach both my artistry and my personal life, with purpose, faith, and a deep sense of alignment.

Connecting with God, my higher power, is what truly keeps me centered and grounded. It’s how I stay connected to my highest self, especially when life gets busy or uncertain. Spiritually, that connection guides every decision I make and reminds me why I do what I do.

On a more practical level, I stay organized using Trello, my calendar, the notes app on my iPhone, and I still love writing things down with a traditional pen and paper. That balance of faith, structure, and reflection helps me stay focused, creative, and in flow every step of the way.
