Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Guzman-lozano
Hi Camila , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have golfed with my dad since I was very little. My love for golf grew over time but something that was hard to find was a group of girls my age who also enjoyed the sport. I found out about the Girls Golf organization and the SCGA Junior program and began my involvement with the two organizations. I have been golfing with the San Fernando Valley girls golf chapter and participating as a girls leader for about 3 years. The SFV Girls golf chapter and SCGA junior program at Woodley Lakes have provided me with the opportunity to bond with coaches, female mentors and other girls interested in learning about the sport of golf. They provide affordable golf lessons and group sessions for all skill levels. Having access to programs that encourage Increased diversity leads to more role models for aspiring female golfers. I have loved the chance to see young women and girls from various ethnicities and backgrounds succeeding and enjoying the sport. I have also connected with the Latina Golfers association which partners with different women all over Los Angeles to learn how to use golf as a business tool. I have had the opportunity to engage in community engagement by using a social media platform to increase awareness to girls golf programs. I plan to continue to be a part of diverse community organizations and community programs that help promote golf to underrepresented groups, increasing accessibility and participation.
Another realy important area for me is to help dismantle stereotypes and barriers, encouraging more women to join and feel welcome in golf. I strongly believe that golf is for everyone and am proud to be a part of organizations that are helping to make the sport more accessible to the Los Angeles community especially to women.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the challenges to girls/women’s golf space is that it is still primarily a male dominated space. There are more and more girls and women interested in golf but the barriers impact young girls engagement in the sport. Golf is an independent sport so having that team aspect and creating girl golf friendly space is extremely important to keeping girls engaged. Also having more access to female coaches for girls as they have a better understanding of the changes that girls go though emotionally and physically.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue to expand my social media platform to create fun and motivational content that encourages other girls to play. Golf isn’t just about being a part of tournaments and focusing on your score. Golf is also about new ways to exercise, building confidence, networking with other women and creating spaces for women and girls to come together.
