Conversations with Broken Records

Today we’d like to introduce you to Broken Records

Broken, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Broken Records was founded two years ago in January 2023 by two vinyl enthusiasts who saw that there was no existing vinyl shops in Namibia, in order to fill this gap, Broken Records became the first and only records shop in Namibia at that time.

Broken Records is situated inside a cafe called Vinyls Music Cafe, were patrons can enjoy a great beverage whilst browsing through the record collection.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The most difficult this was the fact that record shop scene was basically non-existing, which meant that we had to create the scene, see the market, demand and at the same time educate the people.

There are actually plenty of vinyl lovers, collectors and DJs that that are supporting us. Before us the only way to get records was to order it from South Africa or Europe, so we wanted to create a platform for like-minded people to meet, buy records, turntables and by that grow the vinyl scene.

We are also the only venue organizing events with vinyl-DJs, as well as workshops and other functions. We do not want to just be a record shop but more a venue including all the aspects of vinyl culture.

Also getting records and turntables in Namibia is not the easiest path, because of the shipping costs and distance. But we learn by doing and we were able to find the balance and create networks.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We run the record shop and at the same time we take time to find old and new records from around the world, which are unique to our customer base. We focus on second hand records and have rarities all around from Bolivia to Japan and from Nigeria to Ethiopia. There are not too many record shop in the area so it is valuable to be part of building the scene.

We research and connect with other vinyls lovers from neighboring countries as well. The best part of running a record shop is the meet other people who are sharing the same passion.

What’s next?
We plan to have a bigger space to stock more than just vinyls, but other things connected to vinyl, such as merchandise, turntables and other interesting antiques.

we also looking into training and doing workshops about vinyl. how to use, maintain as well as dj’ing.

In the end we keep on doing what we are doing currently, selling and buying records, organizing amazing parties, push the scene, supporting local artists and keep the vinyl culture growing.
