Today we’d like to introduce you to Braeden Ayub
Hi Braeden, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For most of my life I’ve had a camera with me. Through all family vacations, holidays, roadtrips — I was the one behind the lens. For the longest time, I had never considered the possibility of shooting photos professionally. During a recent career break, after coming to the realization that I’ve been passionate about photography for as long as I can remember, I decided to put the effort into going full-time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a smooth road, but a long one. The hardest part has been sticking through the anonymity of the first several months. What helps, I’ve found, is maintaining a consistent online presence. My platform of choice has been Instagram, because at it’s core, I believe it’s still a photo sharing app. There are so many incredible photographers across all social sites, which can be a little intimidating. It’s critical to trust yourself. Use others as inspiration for testing new shooting and/or editing styles, then as you gain familiarity, branch out on your own.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer. I specialize in street and landscape photography, my favorite being the slice-of-life type that allows you to feel like you’re at the scene of the photo. I’m most proud of my ability to see things differently than other people; I’m constantly looking for a sharp contrast in light, maybe from the sun casting a hard shadow in front of a building, or a natural frame, such as the parting of tree branches that create a frame around a famous landmark. What sets me apart from others is the feel of my photos. I like my work to create a calm, relaxing feel that causes the viewer to pause and take in what their viewing.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I have no formal training or education in photography — I am entirely self taught. So the thought of me inspiring others, or teaching others how to improve, seems entirely fraudulent to me. Imposter syndrome has followed me from pursuit to pursuit, but consistently has allowed me to at least pretend to feel like a pro.
