Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Louie and Sun Kim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Alex and I both come from a design background in the ad agency and consulting worlds. We realized we had the desire to use our joint experience to create something one-of-a-kind with the power to impact people on a personal level. In short, we wanted to see how our fun, unique designs can be shared with others to enjoy. After some trial and error in learning how to create a product, we managed to produce our first collection of Story Spark graphic tees – all inspired by the intersection of art and technology. Since then, we’ve been participating in numerous events, both online and in person, in order to connect with others who appreciate our messages and care to share them with others in their lives. This truly inspires us to continue the process of creating distinctive designs and sparking smiles where we can.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like every small business, we’ve had many obstacles to overcome. Some were more significant than others, but they all became valuable learning lessons in the end. Some struggles even came from our own misconceptions, such as thinking that we could easily connect with others by solely being online. After much frustration, it soon became apparent that a more effective way to connect was by branching out in real life. We started close to home (Torrance, CA) and participated at local fairs to see what worked and didn’t work. Fortunately, we met many amazing people from customers to fellow small business owners who helped us form a strong, supportive community. It was this experience that truly reminded us why we started Story Spark in the first place.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Made for those who appreciate art and technology, our work blends tech-inspired themes with the everyday pop culture into fun and original graphics. The intent is to help provide individuals with a unique form of expression that can spark conversations and stories through a shared passion for art and tech in real-life situations. With so much negativity and pessimism in today’s media, we always strive to put forward a positive message that can make one think and be inspired to share. And in regards to the production of our work, all of our graphic designs are created and printed locally in Southern California and manufactured from socially responsible global factories which we’re happy to support.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Looking toward the future is always an exciting exercise. Despite the unclear state of today’s economy, we think the future will bring prosperity as the world continues to emerge from the fallout of the pandemic. People will always want to have a sense of connection with one another and building face-to-face relationships is something that can never be replaced. Fortunately, we’ve been able to grow our business in the past few years alongside a thriving local community. We look forward to continuing to engage with others by participating in existing and new in-person events, joining in-store popups, and even collaborating with other lifestyle brands.
