Conversations with Alessandro Gentile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alessandro Gentile

Alessandro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my film journey back in 2001 after graduating from film school. But I want to focus on the last 5 years of my career. It was valuable for me to jump into line producing and management after college. It gave me the tools to learn how to schedule and budget film productions. This lead to me venturing into cinematography and that helped me understand composition, lighting and the importance of movement. Ultimately I feel like my path has opened up in these last years.

I have always strived to be a director, but in my early years I wasn’t confident enough to pursue it. Not until 2020 during the worst possible timing of the pandemic did my eye open to walk through that door. I found myself directing and producing my first short narrative film, “Lodo”. Everything leading up to this moment was training. I had already been directing commercials and corporate mini-doc projects. It all gave me the confidence I needed to dive in and direct. I feel directing is a life long journey. Your constantly learning and evolving with the times.

In 2021, I came into creative contact with Heather Flores. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. She invited me to film an interview with artist Frank Romero for a new film she was directing. We both were searching for a way to develop, produce and direct our own ideas. Thus Radium 88 Productions was established. Since then we have each directed / produced award winning documentaries and narrative films. Some titles include “Razón De Ser: Luis C. Garza”, “Boundless Borders”, “Duardo” and “Della” to name a few.

“Boundless Borders” is my most recent feature length documentary on the topic of immigration and the undocumented journey of higher education in the U.S. Currently in production “All City: Murals of L.A. Road to the Olympics” a documentary about the decimation of our historic Murals in Los Angeles.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing is smooth in life. But with age comes knowledge and with knowledge comes wisdom. The road was long but persistent. I can honestly say that I never had to wear a suit to work or wear a name tag. It’s really trying to quiet your inner critical voice and accept the vision of your outcome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success I believe is earned. You create a vision out in the future and everyday you need to follow the path to it. Along the way you meet amazing individuals that share the same common vision. In my life I feel like I have already reached a level of success. I never had to get a side gig to make ends meet. Because I have been raising a family solely working in the film industry.
