Today we’d like to introduce you to Aj McGinnis.
Hi Aj , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Anthony McGinnis, and my journey has been one of overcoming immense challenges, discovering my true identity, and embracing the calling God has placed on my life. I was born in Kansas City, adopted at a young age, and eventually moved to Denver, where I spent much of my life struggling with feelings of confusion, depression, and loneliness. Growing up in an environment where I never felt fully understood, I battled with issues of identity and self-worth. These struggles led me down a dark path, and by the time I was 22, I found myself grappling with thoughts of suicide and feeling lost in a world that seemed to offer no solutions.
After high school, I decided to pursue college football but eventually dropped out of school to follow my entrepreneurial passions, specifically in YouTube and business. I immersed myself in entrepreneurship, and by my mid-20s, I was able to build my first million-dollar company. Yet, despite my professional success, I faced a series of personal losses. I lost my father to cancer, and soon after, my world crumbled. I lost everything—my finances, my home, and my sense of security. I became homeless for a time, and there was even a moment when I almost lost my life due to violence and people attempting to take it from me.
In search of deeper fulfillment, I turned to music and acting, landing a role on the hit TV show *All American*. On the outside, it seemed like I was living the dream—working with some of the biggest names in the industry and being viewed as an up-and-coming superstar. Yet, despite this fame, I still felt incomplete. I sought validation from external sources—relationships, attention, and quick fixes—but none of it filled the void.
In September of 2024, everything changed. I made a commitment to God, and after being baptized, I promised that I would use my gifts and platform to serve Him. I realized there was more to my life than fame and success; there was a higher purpose. God had called me to be an actor, a musician, and, most importantly, to help others unlock their blessings and walk in their purpose with faith as their foundation. I knew that the Bible would be my guide, and from that moment, my mission became clear: to help others unlock their full potential, achieve extraordinary success, and live a life aligned with God’s will.
But my journey didn’t stop there. I realized that success isn’t just about professional achievements—it’s about building a strong foundation in every area of life, particularly with finances, relationships, and self-development. I learned the importance of building wealth—both spiritually and financially. True prosperity comes from understanding how to manage your finances, how to grow and cultivate your personal relationships, and how to build a healthy relationship with yourself. It’s about using the resources God has given you to not only provide for yourself but also to serve others, create meaningful connections, and lead with purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
> *Not at all. My journey has been filled with pain most people never see. I was adopted as a baby, and for years I struggled with feeling unwanted — questioning why I wasn’t kept and where I truly belonged. I didn’t meet my birth family until I was 22. But by then, I had already been through more trauma than most people could imagine.*
>
> *I was abused by someone in my adopted family — my adoptive mom’s brother. That experience shattered my sense of safety and identity at a young age. I didn’t know how to process the pain, so I buried it. But buried pain doesn’t disappear — it turns into depression, shame, and self-doubt.*
>
> *I’ve been homeless. I’ve been scammed. I’ve been shot at. I’ve been broke, heartbroken, and mentally at war with myself. There was a point in my life where I seriously thought about ending it all. I didn’t want to die — I just didn’t want to keep living like that. I was silently screaming for help, hoping God would hear me, even when I didn’t know if He was listening.*
>
> *Then I lost my father to cancer. I had to say goodbye to him on FaceTime — watching him take his last breaths through a screen. That moment tore a hole in me I’m still healing from. And yet, in all that pain… I kept creating. I kept writing music. I kept acting. I kept building. I didn’t have a blueprint or a big name behind me. Just a calling — and enough faith to keep going.*
>
> *I’m just a kid from Kansas City who didn’t come from much. But God saw me when I was at rock bottom. He pulled me out and gave me purpose. Now, I use my story — all of it — to let others know that you can come from the darkest places and still shine. You can be abused and still be chosen. You can want to give up and still be called to lead.*
>
> *No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. But it’s been a **real one**. And through every scar, I’ve found strength I never knew I had. My life isn’t perfect — but it’s proof that redemption is real.*
>
> *Today, I use the Bible as my standard. I live my life rooted in **Jeremiah 29:11** — “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” That verse carried me through the darkest nights, and now it shapes everything I do.*
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear a few hats — I’m an actor, a music artist, a speaker, and an entrepreneur. But at the core of it all, I’m a storyteller. Whether it’s on screen, through a song, on stage, or through helping others grow their business, everything I do is about impact, authenticity, and purpose.
As an actor, I’ve had the blessing to be part of powerful projects, like working on All American, where I got to represent real stories that reflect our culture. As a music artist, I create faith-based, truth-centered music that speaks to people who feel unseen, unheard, or misunderstood. It’s not about being “churchy” it’s about being real. I speak life into people through art that actually heals.
I’m also a business mentor. I help entrepreneurs especially those from overlooked communities scale their companies with confidence, integrity, and strategy. I’ve helped barbers, creators, and service-based professionals go from surviving to thriving. Because I know what it’s like to start with nothing and have to build something from scratch.
What sets me apart isn’t just the work I do it’s the heart I do it with. I’m not chasing fame. I’m chasing purpose. My brand is built on transparency, faith, and results. I don’t just perform I connect. I don’t just talk I live what I teach. I’ve been through the trenches homelessness, abuse, grief, trauma and I’ve turned that pain into purpose.
I’m most proud of how I’ve allowed God to use my brokenness to help others heal. I’ve had people message me saying, “Your words stopped me from taking my life,” or “Your story made me believe I could try again.” That means more to me than any award or spotlight ever could.
What truly sets me apart is that I don’t follow culture I set a new standard. I use the Bible as my foundation. I live by Jeremiah 29:11. Everything I do from business to film to music is rooted in faith, impact, and calling. This isn’t just a career. It’s a mission.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Throughout my journey, I realized that chasing money, fame, and fleeting pleasures was a path many take, but it never brought lasting fulfillment for me. Whenever I put God last, life had a way of humbling me and reminding me of what truly matters.
That’s why I now approach everything with purpose and put God first. When your foundation is rooted in faith and intentionality, success takes on deeper meaning, and every step feels aligned with a greater plan.
