Conversations with Aileen Aportela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aileen Aportela

Hi Aileen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Honeyboards LA was born from a personal journey of reconnection. After a close friendship was strained by my move to San Francisco, I sought a way to mend that bond. It was my dear friend who introduced me to Boursin cheese, which has since become a staple on my boards. Now, I include it on every board, a small tribute to how food can bring people closer.

With the support and guidance of my boyfriend Mo, who has experience in small business, I gathered everything I needed to start this venture. While the path has been far from easy, requiring immense dedication and consistency, I pour my heart into every detail. My hope is that these boards not only bring joy but also create moments that connect families, just as they’ve done for mine

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a first-time small business owner, one of my biggest challenges has been growing my client base. However, I trust that with time and dedication, my skills will guide me toward success. In November 2023, I faced a significant setback when I fractured my clavicle, leaving me unable to create boards for six months. It was a difficult time, but I shifted my focus toward building a supportive community for Honeyboards LA.

When I was finally able to return to work in February, I realized how much love and dedication I had poured into those months. Seeing the community I had nurtured during my recovery was a reminder that even in challenging times, growth happens in unexpected ways.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently work as a private chef for a treatment center, and I absolutely love what I do. This role has not only deepened my compassion but has also given me invaluable knowledge about the health industry. One of the most rewarding aspects is hearing from clients how much the food has played a pivotal role in their mental health journey.

I’m especially proud of my growth as a baker. When I first started, baking wasn’t my strongest skill, but now, I can confidently create flatbreads, sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, and naan. It’s been an exciting journey to see my skills evolve and to share my passion with those I serve.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Pursue what you love and turn it into a passion. Be patient, as success takes time. What is meant for you will always find its way.
