Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahmed
Ahmed, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Ahmed, and I go by the name Garaz. I’m an Egyptian-American whose journey took an unexpected turn when I lost my job working events for a private school—a job I dedicated over five years to, full of physical, hands-on work. When the pandemic hit, finding a new position felt nearly impossible, and I was left searching for opportunities that didn’t require a degree.
In the midst of my search, I discovered drones. This led to a spark of curiosity that I quickly pursued. I taught myself how to fly, got my FAA Part 107 certification, and soon found myself craving even more challenges. That’s when I delved into first-person view (FPV) drones. Through countless hours of self-study, I learned to build drones from scratch, mastered complex software, and practiced acrobatic flight—all thanks to the support of YouTube tutorials and the amazing FPV community.
Today, my life is completely transformed. I went from knowing nothing about drones to building, customizing, and flying my own creations, each tailored to my own preferences using open-source software. What began as a challenge during a difficult time has become my passion and my career, giving me a new purpose and drive.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning first-person view (FPV) drones was a journey filled with constant setbacks and struggles. Building drones from scratch was a steep learning curve, and I faced countless failures along the way. I remember the days and weeks spent just trying to assemble everything correctly, dealing with wiring issues, and troubleshooting all the technical details. Each mistake meant more time, money, and effort, but I was committed to mastering every part of the process.
Flying acrobatically added another layer of challenge. I dedicated endless hours to the simulator, working through the frustration of learning maneuvers that felt nearly impossible at first. It was an intense practice routine, requiring patience and grit. I kept pushing through each moment of doubt because I knew that with persistence, I’d gain the control and precision that make FPV flying so rewarding.
On top of the technical hurdles, I also faced negativity and criticism. Some people attacked me simply for pursuing my passion, not understanding the potential of drone technology or its many benefits. Their ignorance didn’t discourage me—in fact, it strengthened my resolve. My love for FPV and the thrill it brings kept me focused, and I refused to let anything stop me from doing what I enjoy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I fly drones for a living, working part-time with heavy enterprise drones and full-time with FPV (first-person view) drones. I’m known for capturing shots that regular drones can’t achieve. My unique skill is being able to show perspectives from ground level and then throttle up to reveal breathtaking views from above, showcasing the beauty of life. I specialize in FPV drones.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
