Today we’d like to introduce you to Maalik Murray.
Hi Maalik, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been a fan of podcasts for quite some time. Watching how some of my favorite podcasters came to prominence over time is something that I find very inspiring. I am a fan of a wide range of podcasts – Drink Champs, Bill Burr Monday Morning Podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, the Bodega Boys and many others. With Drink Champs, a podcast created by hip hop artists N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, it’s refreshing to see N.O.R.E create a new path for himself after rapping when, most often, many rappers do not have that opportunity. Seeing how these podcasts grew over time and they can be themselves truly inspired me to do my own podcast, called Sports Leek Podcast, in that same light.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Covid, like everyone else, was a struggle especially with leagues suspending seasons, which made it difficult to cover sports like we usually do. While it was difficult to cover them, I was able to adjust and hold weekly Instagram live sessions to continue the conversation with my audience. On the IG live sessions, we discussed various fun topics like favorite dynamic duos in sports, the best jerseys and top sneakers of all time. Making this adjustment has allowed for us to better prepare for the new upcoming season launch.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the host of Sports Leek Podcast where we cater to true sports fans of all ages and will keep you entertained with real stats, valuable guests and debate-provoking conversations. We discuss all types of sports – not just basketball and football. We also like to incorporate different eras to truly put things in perspective. Many fans nowadays see current players and teams as the greatest of all time but disregard previous generations of talent, so we look to the legends who played before this current generation to give a much broader perspective on sports.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to continue pushing forward with what we’re doing on the podcast. Persevering through all of the challenges that may lay ahead. Remembering that we are a new podcast, so it takes time to grow and build. Trusting your work and effort put into the podcast will help to appreciate it more.
