Conversations with Janaye Diggs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janaye Diggs.

Hi Janaye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for hair, personally and professionally, was ignited in 2013 after receiving my first ever curl by curl haircut. My whole life changed in that chair. It was like a magic trick; an 18 years relationship of uncertainty between my hair and I had vanished, replaced by. a new journey of love and understanding. That is what sparked my passion; the instant replacement of every negative thought about my hair that I believed to be law. That exact same day was the day I dedicated my life to natural hair. Two days after my appointment, I was enrolled in beauty school; one month after graduating I was working at Capella Salon, the birthplace of my love for hair. Expanding my education day in and day out, but most importantly, changing lives on a daily. I believe we are all here to make a difference on this earth, and this is where I choose to make mine. To help people see the beauty in their hair and themselves. To help educate the world on healthy, natural hair. To help the world understand and accept beauty in all forms. Most importantly, to help people love themselves and their hair in ways they never imagined possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obstacles come a dime a dozen, especially when there is so much misinformation out in the curly world. From oils to AVC rinses, there are so many misconceptions about curly hair. Many of us follow in our parent’s footsteps and don’t like to mess with tradition. Even more of us use full access to the internet to get our most up to date knowledge. Sadly, most of the information we have known about curly hair is false and actually leads our hair down a rough road creating damage every step of the way. Most of the issues curly people have with their hair is due to a build-up from products that are catered towards us. I am so very fortunate to have clients who trust in the process and myself because I know it is not easy straying from tradition and what we know. Watching my clients’ hair and ideology transform before our eyes is worth the battle of every single obstacle in my way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in the health and education of naturally curly hair. It all begins with a proper cut; curls should only be cut when dry and naturally curly as possible. This allows for proper shaping of your specific curl pattern, so your curls always fall into a happy place, and ensures each and every ringlet is getting its own specific cut. A literal curl-by-curl cut. By cutting the hair this way, I am able to ensure each ringlet is getting exactly what it needs. Definitely the most thorough haircut I have ever experienced. Followed by a safe, deep cleanse to remove as much build-up from the hair as we can, allowing the hair to be fresh and ready to absorb all of the moisture to come. Following up with the conditioning process; starting with a thorough finger detangling to ensure every single strand is hydrated and tangle-free, sealing with a deep conditioning treatment to lock in as much moisture as possible. Ending the process with a curl friendly style to bring out the best in your new hydrated curls! Not to forget, a complete curl education course catered to your specific head of hair!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The biggest Cheers to Shai and Nicole Amiel. My mentors and salon family. Shai gave me my first ever curl-by-curl haircut back in 2013. Upon my graduation from cosmetology school, Shai and Nicole took me under their wing at Capella Salon. I trained with them for two and a half years, absorbing all of the knowledge they bestowed upon me. They taught me about curls, life, and everything in between. I wouldn’t be half the stylist I am today without their guidance and constant love and support.
