Conversations with the Inspiring Jessica Rubin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rubin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a nanny for well over a decade—I started when I was practically a kid myself, and while I love what I do, I felt myself becoming somewhat stagnant. I have always loved fashion and talked about starting a fashion blog for years, so finally last February decided to bite the bullet. I realized I had fallen into a rut both when it came to fashion and creativity in general, so I decided it was high time to stop talking about doing something and actually do it. The reception and support I’ve received since then have been incredible. This journey has taught me the importance of putting oneself out there. It’s something I apply every day now both to my blog and my job as a nanny– it has helped me teach my kiddos that it’s okay to be creative in any way that inspires you and to embrace who you love it no matter what!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was my own biggest obstacle as cliche as that may sound. It took me to finally sit down and really begin doing what I’d talked about for ages. The fear of rejection and self-doubt were overwhelming, but I finally hit a wall where I realized if I didn’t jump over it, I was going to stand behind it forever. Making the leap to start Remix Rematch and put myself out there was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done (and that includes a 12-hour flight with a toddler), but also has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to date.

What should we know about Remix Rematch? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My blog Remix Rematch focuses on everyday fashion, with a twist, while also using statement pieces in different ways to create whole new looks. I began it finally when I decided to try out Rent The Runway as a means to step outside of my comfort zone and hopefully inspire others to do the same. Fashion is a creative outlet for me and I hope to help others view it as one as well, and above all just have some fun! Wear sequins during the day or a big fur coat to the park–if you feel good in something that’s all that should matter! LA is such an eclectic and diverse city, why not add to that spice?

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
There are more than just a few, but what I would like to see more of is women building each other up, rather than tearing each other down—which is one thing I see happen all too often, whether is on the comments section of a blog, Instagram or other social networks. When there’s a barrier of a screen, people often forget that behind those post and photos is a real person with feelings.
