Conversations with Giselle Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Garcia.

Giselle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico in the hopes of providing a better quality of living and experience for my brother and I. Growing up, I lived a very comfortable middle-class upbringing. My parents made sure we had everything my brother and I needed and some more. Education was always something my parents pushed on us when we were younger because they believed that having an education was going to open up endless opportunities for us to be able to succeed. Neither of my parents graduated high school due to making the decision of moving to the US and to begin working to be able to support themselves and their family. My mom and dad have always been there for me and my brother, they made sure that we had the resources in order to be able to have the best opportunity to do the things we wanted in our lives. It definitely translates to why I decided that I wanted to pursue a major (Psychology) that would teach me the things I needed to be able to understand each individual, because every person is different, and find ways that I can be there for them. It helped me be the best resource for children in whatever aspect of their lives they need support in. Being able to apply what I learn in order to illuminate our understanding and improve the world around us. It begins within our community and I want to be able to enhance the lives around me, just as my parents did for my brother and I.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Uncertainty and the feeling of not being good enough.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of California Riverside in 2019 and currently work at Fit Learning where I met the director and my wonderful boss, Julie Albanese, in November that same year. Fit Learning is a highly specialized program that provides unparalleled services to every kind of student. We approach every learner as a unique case and develop a custom curriculum in order to meet their specific needs. Our mission is to transform the learning abilities of all children who walk through our doors such that they achieve greatness in their communities and beyond. I am beyond blessed to be able to make a difference in these learners lives by giving them the resources and the confidence they need in order to succeed. One thing that I believe sets me apart from others is passion. I’ve been drained emotionally, physically, financially, but what has pushed me has been this passion to help others. Sacrificing my own desires in order to do that is what defines this passion that I have. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success means that we live the life we truly want and not just the life we settle for. But it goes way beyond that. It’s knowing that you are able to help others live a happier and better life. Success to me looks like a life given to others.
