Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Young and Michelle Young.
Hi Nicole and Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Baja Betches began in a taco shop in Rosarito, Mexico in 2020. We started this social media page to support and promote local businesses and events in cities like Tijuana, Rosarito, Valle de Guadalupe, and Ensenada, Mexico.
While we did not set out to start a brand, we were driven by the local communities around us, especially after seeing how the pandemic took a toll on small businesses.
This page which we thought would only be followed by our close friends seemed to capture the attention of tons of people, even internationally. We have been growing quickly and started selling merchandise like shirts, sweaters, hats, and bags. We have even partnered with other Latin-owned brands to raise money for surf camps in Mexico for kids with disabilities. Ever since Baja Betches has been evolving far beyond a “travel blog” to an audience of thousands on social media and building strong relationships with businesses and entrepreneurs within these border towns.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We can honestly say that creating this brand and working with local business owners has been fun! The biggest challenge that we have faced seems to be the lack of social media presence of some businesses in these areas.
We have met with many business owners, identified their needs, and worked with them and their staff to create social media content and campaigns that highlight their services. Instagram, in particular, is very new to some businesses so we take an extra step to help them create content and connect them to other accounts with larger followings for more support.
As you know, we’re big fans of Baja Betches. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We do a lot more than post photos online. We are a brand that’s made by and for travelers who don’t take themselves too seriously. Think of us as your besties who are always down to have a good time. From getting free drinks and ghosting guys at the bars, to trying new foods and cocktails, to spending the night in affordable Airbnb’s in wine country or on the beach, we’re with you throughout every stage of your weekend getaway in Mexico. We inform our thousands of followers on things like travel itineraries, transportation, bars with fun drinks, restaurants with killer ocean views, day drinking events, and much more.
We also have an e-commerce store with funny wearable sayings that will look great in your Instagram posts. What sets us apart from others is that we are relatable AF. We highlight places that are worth going to and are guaranteed to get you triple-digit likes on all your social media platforms. We share experiences in both English and Spanish and post hilarious content that will have you saying “that is so me.”
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We are excited about all of the opportunities that have already been brought upon us. We definitely plan on expanding the brand and giving back to the local communities in big ways.
We are always searching for other Latin-owned brands to work with and we are constantly on the hunt for new ways to highlight business and events taking place in Mexico. We are in talks about possibly holding events at local breweries and we’ve got tons of great content in the works.
