Today we’d like to introduce you to Nea Simone.
Hi Nea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a storyteller who’s worn just about every hat—author, marketer, producer, technologist—and each chapter led me to the same mission: help creators find their audience and own their value.
I started as a novelist. My debut, Reaching Back, found an unexpected life—16+ reprints and two more books to complete the trilogy. Touring, meeting readers, and navigating publishing taught me two truths: great work needs great positioning, and communities drive success. That insight pulled me behind the curtain into film and TV marketing, where I began crafting campaigns for independent creators the way studios do—only more personal, more multicultural, and more data-driven.
As the industry shifted, I leaned into technology early. I launched Melanated Studios to explore Web3 long before it was cool, hosted NFT ATLANTA CON in 2022, and wrote a white paper on using blockchain to protect filmmakers’ IP from script to screen. That R&D became MediaSafe Technologies, a framework to safeguard indie assets. Eventually I merged those efforts into my firm, Bespoke Media Marketing, whose motto is “We Find Your Tribe!” We design customized go-to-market strategies—storyworld development, partnerships, experiential activations, and windowing math that respects both art and revenue. Along the way I’ve collaborated with brands and platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Sony Pictures, and I’ve shared lessons on stages from Cannes Marché du Film to the African Cinema Summit. Most recently, I published NOW PLAYING: From Script to Screen — Web3 Film Funding Playbook, Vol. 1, a practical guide to financing and protecting indie projects in Web3.
It hasn’t been a straight line. I’ve bootstrapped, been “too early,” lost deals, and had to explain new technology in rooms that weren’t ready to hear it. Those moments toughened my instincts and deepened my empathy for creators who are brilliant but under-resourced. They also refined my lane: translating vision into commercial pathways without compromising voice—especially for diverse storytellers and audiences (a $3.9T market too often treated as an afterthought).
Today, I lead Bespoke Media Marketing, consult for filmmakers and founders, and continue building franchise-ready IP—including the animated feature The Secret of the Moonstone—while mentoring the next wave of creators. If there’s a through line, it’s this: I connect art, audience, and innovation so original stories don’t just get made—they get seen, loved, and sustained.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Short answer: no—it hasn’t been smooth. But the friction shaped my lane and my playbook.
Early on, I was “too early” with Web3. I had to translate jargon into outcomes for rooms that were skeptical or fatigued by hype. That meant doing double work: educating while delivering results. It taught me to lead with business cases—audience growth, rights protection, revenue windows—before I ever say “blockchain.”
As a boutique founder, I’ve also navigated the feast-or-famine cycle: long sales lead times, moving targets, and stakeholders who want studio-level output on indie budgets. I solved this by productizing parts of my process (storyworld/audience audits, windowing math, launch sprints) so clients see value fast and teams can scale without burnout.
Bias is real, too—both toward independent creators and multicultural audiences. I’ve watched great projects get underestimated until a trend or a celebrity makes them “safe.” I counter that with data, partnerships, and packaging that meet gatekeepers where they are while preserving the creator’s voice.
Representative bumps—and what they taught me:
Scope creep & unpaid discovery: I now set clear stages, paid consultations, and decision gates. Boundaries protect the work.
Complex rights & IP risk: I built a rights-first workflow and advocate for blockchain-backed asset tracking to keep indie creators protected.
Team scaling: Going from solo to squads required repeatable systems, transparent budgets, and post-mortems on every campaign.
Market shocks (strikes, platform pivots): Diversified release plans and multiple monetization paths are standard—not nice-to-have.
The through line is resilience with receipts: use rigor, community, and creativity to turn headwinds into momentum. Those lessons are why I share frameworks openly and why I wrote my practical guide for creators; the goal isn’t just to survive the bumps—it’s to shorten the road for the next person.
