Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Mendoza.
Hi Martha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Martha Mendoza. I am the owner of Martitas Flowers LLC located in the heart of the largest flower district in the United States. How Martitas Flowers LLC started is quite interesting. In 2008 I migrated from Mexico to the United States with my husband and children. I had previous business experience in business as I used to own a cheese factory and a grocery store in my hometown. However, having a flower shop was never something I dreamed of. I got introduced to the flower market by my sisters, two business owners within the flower district. My family has been in the flower business since the 1990s. When I moved to the US my sisters introduced me to the business and worked for sometime before I opened my flower shop . I was new to the industry, but I knew how to deal with clients given my experience. I had no experience with arrangement making, but I was eager to learn and make a living for myself. A year and a half later in 2009, my sisters saw there was a flower space for rent and they were the ones who decided to throw me in the water. I was anxious as I did not have much experience with flowers, but they let me know I would learn as I go. They were right, you are not born knowing how to do everything in life, but one can learn to make something of themselves. Although I started making flower bouquets and basic arragments today Martitas Flowers LLC provides flowers for weddings, events, XVs, Corporate Events, Funerals, Custom made, and Special Ocassions. We started as a family business and continue to be a family business something our clients love. We focus on providing the highest quality of flowers for our clients and constantly work with them to develop any ideas for their future events or occasions.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The ride has been anything but smooth since the beginning. We opened the flowershop in 2009 a little after the 2008 financial crisis. A crazy idea during one of the hardest times in the country for many. I had very little experience from flowers and the little I learned was thanks to my sisters who had been in business for quite some time. However, one thing about flowers and arrangement making is that is opens the door for creativity. It’s a form of art that those who consume/buy our products appreciate. It makes room for error and also room to bring new ideas to the table. We cater to our clients and they guide us through their needs and wants. They are our roadmap and we are the ones who make their ideas come to life. Our clients are the reason we are a business and they have shaped us through the years.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my most cherished childhood memories is working with my father in the fields. My dad always wanted boys but he first had to deal with five daughters. He didn’t shy away from the fact that we were girls and since we were little taught us the value of hard work and perseverance. My work ethic comes from working the fields since I was a little girl and has had a spillover effect on the business I have opened throughout my life.
