Community Highlights: Meet Lisa Jung, ND FABNG of Jung Naturopathic Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Jung, ND FABNG.

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being a naturopathic doctor wasn’t always my first choice… in fact, I didn’t even know about naturopathic medicine until I was in college. I studied and got my degree in pharmaceutical sciences to become a pharmacist, but that path changed after I got sick with viral meningitis in my last year of college. After going through the conventional medical care, I quickly realized how our healthcare system is so great when it comes to emergent, life-saving situations, but lacks in other aspects when a patient is no longer in a life-threatening state. It took months to recover from the infection, and what helped me the most were nutrition, rest, and herbs/supplement regimen. Since then, I learned about naturopathic medicine from a local naturopathic doctor and began my journey into this medicine. After naturopathic medical school and completing 3 years of residency program, I opened my virtual naturopathic practice, Jung Naturopathic Wellness!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish it was a smooth road, but that wouldn’t be so much fun either! For me personally, there were few different aspects of struggles along the way. First was in the professional sector; I committed to myself that I’d complete residency after graduation (which by the way, in naturopathic medicine, NDs are not required to complete a residency). I did this because I wanted to continue to learn, better my knowledge and skills to become the best doctor that I could be for my patients. Most folks when they do residency programs, they complete 1-2 year(s), but I ended up completing 3 years! It worked out so well though because I got to be a chief naturopathic resident at my alma mater, University of California, Irvine. Second was in the business sector; starting a practice, or a small business in general, is daunting! I wasn’t too familiar with running a business so that was a new skill to learn and get comfortable with. Once I got the hang of it though, it became fun! These were struggles but it led to everything I wanted to achieve and more!

As you know, we’re big fans of Jung Naturopathic Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a naturopathic doctor, I provide naturopathic medical care to my patients, specifically in digestive health, hormones, and general wellness. Digestive health though is my bread & butter, and I recently received my fellowship of the American Board of Naturopathic Gastroenterology. Naturopathic medicine is quite unknown for most people; every naturopathic doctor has their own definition and approach to the medicine, but for me, I love to take an integrative approach that brings both conventional and natural approaches to treating a person. My background and experiences help me to approach this way, which really sets me and my practice apart. What I am most proud of my practice and care is the exceptional care and attention each person receives – the amount of detail through a person’s history, the education and discussion of how the body works, and shared decision-making that fits the best for each person. If you have always wondered about natural or holistic medicine but is overwhelmed by what is also on the internet, my practice also focuses on these discussions. It’s easy to start supplements or products because it was on social media, but does every need it? No. Is everyone going to benefit from it? Probably not. If you want a doctor who listens to your concerns, spends the time with you to go through your questions and concerns, and give you the pros/cons of both sides of medicine, that’s what my practice is all about.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe everyone needs to be a risk taker; the degree of how much risk is dependent on the person! Few major risks I took: 1st is giving up my path to become a pharmacist to become a naturopathic doctor. It is not a safe, stable field like other medicine. 2nd is giving up a job offer at a place I always dreamt about being at after residency, and starting my practice! I grew up with the belief that if you don’t take risks, you’re always going to live in the regret of not taking the risk. I don’t like the “What if’s,” and I have always the intuition that if this risk aligns with me, then I need to see it through.
