Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Egu.
Hi Ken, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Here’s how God has been working in my life. I was born in Owerri, Nigeria, and moved to the Bay Area, California, with my family when I was eight years old. Growing up, I faced a lot of resistance—my parents’ divorce, emotional and mental challenges, and the realities of racism and cultural adjustment. But through all of it, I learned resilience and purpose.
I found early success in football and track and field, earning Division 1 scholarship offers from the University of Washington. I later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media Arts from Duquesne University, and then moved to Los Angeles after being accepted into the #1 film and games program in the world at the University of Southern California, where I earned my MFA in Interactive Media and Game Design.
Since then, I’ve founded The Books of Egu LLC, a production and education company that uses art, film, gaming, and technology to make learning fun and accessible again. We’ve developed three mobile games under The Forerunners Gospel series—reimagining faith-based stories through contemporary gaming—and we teach STEAM programs to youth in underserved communities across South LA, Inglewood, and Downey. Our mission is to help students transition from consumers to creators.
At my core, I’m a storyteller. I use different creative mediums—whether film, games, or art—to inspire and empower others. One of my biggest artistic inspirations is Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball Z. His storytelling and creativity sparked my own journey as an artist and showed me how imagination can build worlds and move people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe every challenge was part of God’s plan to shape my character and mission. Growing up as a Nigerian immigrant in America, I faced a lot of cultural, emotional, and financial challenges—everything from racism and self-doubt to learning how to navigate two completely different worlds. My parents’ divorce and early experiences with instability taught me how to adapt and find strength in my faith.
In my creative journey, the struggles were just as real—trying to fund my projects, build a business from scratch, and gain recognition in industries that can be difficult to break into. There were many moments of rejection and uncertainty, but those experiences pushed me to become more resourceful, disciplined, and focused on my purpose.
Every setback became an opportunity to grow, and I learned that resilience, faith, and community are the real keys to success. The path hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful—and it’s given me the fire to keep creating spaces where art, education, and storytelling can uplift others.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Books of Egu. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Books of Egu is a creative production and education company that blends art, film, gaming, and technology to make learning fun, relevant, and empowering again. We specialize in creating interactive experiences—from video games and comics to digital courses—that inspire creativity and teach valuable skills in storytelling, design, and STEAM education.
We’re known for bridging culture, purpose, and technology through projects like The Forerunners Gospel game series and our award-winning web docuseries Echoes of the City, which highlights the underground music and creative scenes of Los Angeles. What sets us apart is our commitment to storytelling with intention—we don’t just create for entertainment, we create to educate, uplift, and spark transformation.
I’m most proud of how our brand represents authenticity and impact. Whether it’s through teaching game design to underrepresented youth, showcasing local artists, or reimagining faith-based narratives through gaming, everything we do at The Books of Egu centers on purpose and community.
Ultimately, we want people to know that our work is about turning consumers into creators—giving people the tools and inspiration to tell their own stories, build their own worlds, and use creativity as a force for good.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that purpose is greater than pressure. Every obstacle—whether it was financial hardship, rejection, or creative burnout—taught me that persistence and faith open doors that talent alone can’t. I’ve learned to trust God’s timing and to keep creating even when the results aren’t immediate. Growth takes patience, and impact takes consistency. The journey isn’t about perfection; it’s about walking in purpose and using your gifts to serve others.
