The Bibim Paws story began in the kitchen of Joyce Kang, the founder after her first dog became ill and died after eating from a bag of recalled dog food in 2012. Joyce was traumatized after experiencing this and began educating and researching about the cause of these recalls and discovered the horrible truth behind the pet food industry. The lack of transparency and poor quality control over pet food products were alarming so Joyce began consulting with nutritionists and veterinarians about cooking her own pet food at home for her own pets. This is how Bibim Paws began and is now the first and only certified organic, humane fresh pet food on the market. All of our ingredients come from whole food sources, so nothing artificial or synthetic is included. We hope Bibim Paws is the answer that other pet parents have been searching for when it comes to feeding their pets the best that they deserve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been very difficult at times especially with the formulation process of the fresh food recipes. I wanted to make sure that every ingredient came from a whole food source. I didn’t want synthetic supplements being a part of my recipes because the over-supplementation of synthetic nutrients present in the current pet food market is alarming and also plays a big role in some of the recalls that are happening due to the lack of quality control. So I spent a lot of time dedicated to extra testing and lab work to make sure all the essential nutrients were present in Bibim Paws fresh food. Choosing to take this route definitely proved to be challenging since other pet food brands usually choose synthetic supplementation. And this was also very difficult to complete with the vet nutritionists that were helping as well since they were also used to the traditional way of just adding in synthetic supplements. Another big struggle was funding this whole company. Paying for licensing, formulation, rent and other business expenses gets very costly when trying to build your own pet food brand on your own. I come from a very traditional Korean family, so any job occupation that doesn’t fall under the medical or law field was pretty much frowned upon. Asking for help from them was not an option. Every penny that’s been put into this company came from my own bank account. It’s definitely been an expensive journey so far but I’m hoping it will all pay off in the end and help other pet parents find the best food possible for their pets.
