Community Highlights: Meet Jon Alegria of Coach Jon’s Online Swim School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Alegria

Hi Jon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started teaching kids and babies to swim over 20+ years ago. Since then I’ve run multiple swim programs, served on the Educational Committee for the United States Swim School Association, written a best-selling children’s book for kids learning to swim, and currently own an indoor swim school.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Teaching swimming is not always a smooth road, there are times when I am working with student’s who have severe special needs, developmental delays, and/or past trauma from near-drowning experiences. But I believe EVERYBODY can learn to swim, regardless of their background or history with water. Working with these unique students challenged me to create a system that could help any child learn to swim, and over the years I’ve developed a program that takes students through a simple step-by-step process to quickly become safe and confident swimmers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Coach Jon’s Online Swim School?
Becoming a parent, I realized one of the greatest joys in life is teaching your child new things while spending time as a family. I began searching for a way to help other parents get to experience this with their kids. That’s when my online swim school was born. I’ve now expanded my swim lessons into online programs designed for parents. Having trained thousands of instructors and parents over the years at my indoor swim school, I began adapting my teaching method to create step-by-step programs that parents can follow along to turn their kids into great swimmers.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years I see the role of “teaching your child to swim” shifting back to parents. There will always be a need for Swim Schools, but I think a lot more parents these days want to be more involved in their child’s lives and are looking for fun ways to do that. And with drowning being the #1 risk to a child’s safety, there’s nothing more important we can teach our kids than how to swim. That’s why we’re committed to helping families create life-saving skills and life-long memories.
