Community Highlights: Meet Johan Duluc of Burbank Therapy Center and RenewMed Therapy Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johan Duluc.

Hi Johan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) began in 2017, at the crossroads of healthcare and strategic consulting. At the time, I was traveling the country as a Management Consultant, gaining insight into diverse industries and healthcare systems. It was during this period that I discovered the transformative potential of PR — a field where hospitals, patients, and outpatient programs form a uniquely synergistic ecosystem. Despite its clear benefits, PR was largely underutilized and lacked the visibility it deserved.

I was drawn to this challenge — and opportunity. That passion led me to Burbank Therapy Center, our flagship location, originally established in 2007. We acquired the center and expanded its mission, committed to delivering comprehensive, compassionate pulmonary care. Although we opened a second location in Murrieta, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to adapt, and we made the strategic decision to relocate and reopen in Santa Clarita in 2021.

Since then, we’ve focused relentlessly on establishing our name and proving our value within the healthcare system. Our goal is not only to help patients breathe easier — but to ensure that Pulmonary Rehabilitation earns its rightful place in the continuum of care. Through innovation, dedication, and collaboration, we continue to reshape how pulmonary care is delivered and perceived.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While our mission is deeply rewarding, it hasn’t come without challenges. One of the most persistent obstacles we face is visibility — not just among patients, but within the U.S. healthcare system itself. Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a proven, life-saving intervention, yet it remains underrecognized and underfunded. Our biggest struggle has been convincing policymakers and health systems that PR doesn’t just improve quality of life — it saves money in the long run by preventing hospital readmissions and managing chronic conditions more effectively.

But the barriers go beyond awareness. Like many in healthcare, we face systemic issues — delayed payments, rising operational costs, and the ever-present risk of cyberattacks, such as the devastating Change Healthcare breach in 2024 that brought much of the industry to a halt. The pandemic only compounded these pressures, with escalating payroll costs and increased demand on already stretched resources.

Still, we push forward. Someone once told me, “Anything worth doing is going to be hard work,” and I believe that wholeheartedly. At Burbank Therapy Center and our new Santa Clarita location, we see the difference we’re making — not just in numbers, but in lives. In our own way, we’re helping people breathe easier, and that makes every challenge worth it.

We’ve been impressed with Burbank Therapy Center and RenewMed Therapy Center , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At our core, we are a Pulmonary Rehabilitation provider dedicated to helping individuals with chronic lung conditions reclaim their quality of life. Through tailored exercise programs, education, and emotional support, we guide patients through a comprehensive journey of healing — one that addresses both the physical and psychological toll of chronic respiratory illness.

We specialize in outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation, with a focus on creating accessible, patient-centered care that bridges the gap between hospital discharge and long-term health management. What sets us apart is not just our clinical expertise, but our commitment to whole-person care. Our team builds deep relationships with patients, encouraging them, advocating for them, and celebrating every milestone of their recovery.

We’re most proud of the trust our patients place in us — and the results we see every day. Our Burbank and Santa Clarita centers have become safe havens for patients who once felt out of options. Brand-wise, we stand for hope, perseverance, and advocacy — not just for our patients, but for the future of PR as a recognized, funded, and essential part of the healthcare system.

We want your readers to know that PR is not just about breathing better — it’s about living better. Our doors are open to anyone with a chronic lung condition looking for a path forward. With the right support, a better life is not just possible — it’s achievable.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, we anticipate a major evolution in how Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is perceived, delivered, and integrated into mainstream healthcare. One of the most significant shifts we’re expecting is increased recognition — both from healthcare providers and policymakers — of the vital role PR plays in reducing hospital readmissions, improving patient outcomes, and driving down overall healthcare costs.

We’re also seeing a growing trend toward hybrid and home-based rehab models, driven by advances in remote monitoring, telehealth platforms, and wearable technology. This has the potential to expand access dramatically, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas. At the same time, there’s a push to personalize care more deeply — using data, AI, and behavioral insights to tailor each patient’s journey.

Another critical area of focus will be workforce development. As the population ages and respiratory diseases become more prevalent, we’ll need more skilled professionals trained in PR. Our field is uniquely positioned at the intersection of clinical care, technology, and patient empowerment — and we believe it’s poised to become a standard part of chronic disease management.

The future is promising, but it will require continued advocacy, investment, and innovation. We’re excited to be part of shaping what comes next.
